About This Play/Drill

#PressureManTips

On-ball defenders - Make every attempt not to allow middle drives through the elbow from the wing!

BUT if/when they do occur, "Top I" always helps!

There are two options available:

  • Trap at elbow
  • Fly Switch

  • When the ball is on the wing, the defender should make every attempt to push the ball towards the baseline checkpoint.

However, if/when the dribbler tries to drive middle, the defender should protect the elbow and force the dribbler back up the rooftop to the top of the circle.

There will be times when wing defenders give up drives to the middle.

RULE: "Top I" must stop any dribble penetration from the wings.

X1 maintains a pass DENIAL position on 1. X2, in the Top I helpside position, must rotate to stop 3's penetration and prevent the lay-up.

X3 is trying to influence to the baseline checkpoint. However, if 3 should drive middle X3 locks up with X2 to trap 3.

X4, in the Low I helpside position closes out to a pass DENIAL position against 4. X5 assumes a pass DENIAL position against 5.

  • Close Outs and Rotations: X1 closes out to 2 on pass release. X1 assumes an on BALL position and pushes 2 toward sideline checkpoint.

X2 sprint releases and and creates box pressure by quickly closing out to a pass DENIAL position against 1.

X3 maintains a pass DENIAL position against 3.

X4 maintains a pass DENIAL position on 4, and X5 assumes Low I helpside position against 5

  • Drive and Drop: If X4, in a Low I helpside position, steps up to help, it will create a passing lane for 3 to drop the ball off to 4 for an easy lay-up.

  • Drive and Drop: If post (X5) steps out to help, it will create an easy drop pass for 3 to 5 for an easy lay-up
