About This Play/Drill

Here are some more basic drills we have found extremely valuable during the "implementing Dribble Drive" phase, which we still use on a daily/weekly basis (they are a modified version of the traditional DDM Blood Drills).

The importance of being able to create a "split" (where two defenders commit to the ball carrier) is pararmount within our DDM system, but the ability to be able to make an appropriate read/decision is just as important. There is no point getting in to the paint if you are just going to throw the ball away.

What we are doing in this series is creating gamelike situations for our players, then letting them play it out and build on their decision making ability. You can move the initial setup to suit your teams needs, and all players are encouraged to play all positions/roles as part of their basketball IQ development.

  • 2 v 2 DDM Decision Making Work

O1 starts with the ball just behind the 3pt line

X1 starts on O1's hip (or behind O1 to create a greater advantage)

Position O5 & X5 as you see fit, however I normally position them on split line & weak-side block.

As soon as O1 takes their 1st dribble, we are live

Note: O1's first read should be "Attack the Rim" to score, only passing if their lay-up is taken away from X5

  • 3 v 3 DDM Decision Making Work

The set up of the 3v3 is the same as the 2v2 phase, we have simply added a weak-side shooter.

O2 must move/slide according to where O1 drives, they should be "diagonal" to each other.

Note: O1's first read should be "Attack the Rim" to score, only passing if their lay-up is taken away from X5

Note II: A verbal queue we use for O2 to is "get to where the ball can see you" so you can be a scoring option on the kick out.

  • 4 v 4 DDM Decision Making Work

The set up of the 4v4 is the same as the 3v3 phase, we have simply added a ball-side shooter/wing.

O2 & O3 must move/slide according to where O1 drives, O2 should be "diagonal" to O1 & O3 can either lift OR back door cut according to what O1 does with the ball.

Note: A verbal queue we use for O2 to is "get to where the ball can see you" so you can be a scoring option on the kick out.

Note II: O3 should look to either hold for the catch n shoot OR lift for the catch n shoot if X3 commits to help D early. Another read we encourage O3 to make is if there is a straight line between them-defender-ball, then they must back door cut.

  • 5 v 5 DDM Decision Making Work

Second weak-side shooter has now been added (O4), everything else is the same as previous diagrams.
