About This Play/Drill

In this diagram and embedded video we go through all the phases of our shell defense for a full breakdown. I believe you will find at least one golden nugget to incorporate into your version of shell defense in here. We run a gap style of defense, but the structure of the drill will translate to any type of defense you may play.

  • Warmup Phase - Closeouts

Each defensive player starts with a ball, underneath the basket, shoulder to shoulder with their teammates. Each player will pass the ball out to their match up and begin a closeout. They will then creep up into the offensive player to pressure the ball. The offense should be working on fakes and jabs for the defender to absorb, and holding the ball on left side, right side, and over their head.

  • Warmup Phase - Close Outs Cont.

We now ask the offensive players to take 1-2 purposeful dribbles and then pick the ball up. The defender should stay in front of the dribbler and then jam the dead pivot foot of the offensive player, yelling "kill, kill, kill" and mirroring the basketball (4/4/4 Drill-pressure ball, play a dribbler, jam pivot)

  • Phase 1 - Pass on Command

We are now down to one ball and any defender can roll the ball out. The player receiving the rolled ball will be closed out, while the other 4 defensive players sprint to help positioning.

  • Phase 1 - Pass on Command Cont.

The ball is moved on the coaches command and should be held for a few seconds, enough for the defense to rotate and ball pressure to be applied. We are focusing on our ball pressure, positioning and communication. There should be 4-5 passes and then a shot by the offense on the coaches command. At that point it's a rebounding drill to finish the possession.

  • Phase 2 - Drive & Kick

A new player rolls the ball out and closes out while the remaining defenders sprint to help.

  • Phase 2 - Drive & Kick Cont.

The offense can drive the ball to the basket and will then return to their spot they started (No cutting and filling). The defense needs to gap the penetration with positioning and recover out. A straight line drive in this phase of the drill is definitely a double suicide for the defense. The ball is live on a shot attempt and needs to be rebounded.

  • Phase 3 - Cut & Return

A new player rolls the ball out and closes out while the remaining defenders sprint to help.

  • Phase 3 - Cut & Return Cont.

Now we move the ball around the perimeter and players may cut from the weak side and return to their original spot. At this point we need to bust a cutter and ride them until they go behind. We must maintain ball and man vision through defending the cut. We also need to work on defending the basket cut after passing by jumping to the ball.

  • Phase 4 - Trap & Rotate

A new player rolls the ball out and closes out while the remaining defenders sprint to help.

  • Phase 4 - Trap & Rotate (Fist)

We now work on our trap the first pass scheme. We put 2players on the ball and deny the immediate pass to the left and right. The furthest defender from the ball plays the remaining 2 offensive players, using his positioning to cover the basket up and anticipating out
