About This Play/Drill

In today’s diagram and embedded video we look at a defensive drill. I like this drill as a change of pace to use instead of shell defense during the team defense block in our practice plan.

  • Drill begins with an offense and defense on both wings with a coach in the middle. The coach passes the ball to either side and the defense works on closing out and sprinting to the mid line. We are working on the proper footwork both the closeout, as well as the sprint to help position.

  • The coach can dribble at a defender, which triggers the defender to leave his chest in the gap and then recover out when the coach picks up his dribble or passes the ball. The first phase of the drill has the coach yell “shot” which triggers the offense to shoot the ball. The defense must contest to the face or the ball and then rebound. The final phase has the coach yelling “live” which indicated the offense can shoot, pass or dribble.
