Basketball Play - Oregon Flex Stagger

Oregon Flex Stagger

Wes Kosel 03/20/2015

Here is a flex option used by Oregon in the first half against Oklahoma State. The Cowboys defended the action well, but it looks like a good set-up for future plays from the Ducks. The play starts in regular flex with a flex-screen and down-screen. Instead of continuous flex, 2 and 4 set a staggered screen for 3 on the weak side and 1 clears out to the corner. This play gives 5 the opportunity to take his man to the basket 1 on 1 or pass to 3 for a 3-point shot. See More

Basketball Play - Oklahoma State Flex Slide Hand-Off

Oklahoma State Flex Slide Hand-Off

Wes Kosel 03/20/2015

Oklahoma State used this flex option early when Oregon was playing man to man defense. The Cowboys didn't get a good shot since they gave up on the play after the hand-off (they did not get to the screen for Forte at the end). However, this is a good play to get Forte (2) open for a shot. The play starts in traditional flex with the ball moving from right to left. Instead of 1 setting the down-screen for the flex screener inside, 1 slides to the right wing as 4 sets the down-screen. Once 5 gets the ball at the top of the key, he dribbles right to give 1 the ball on a dribble hand-off. At the same time, Forte sets a cross-screen in the post then cuts to the wing off of a down-screen from 5. This play is difficult to guard because 5's defender has to worry about the hand-off and then react to Forte cutting to the wing. See More

Basketball Play - Shocker ATO Horns FLEX

Shocker ATO Horns FLEX

Randy Sherman 03/20/2015

Leading 76-74 with 53.5 seconds remaining, Wichita State ran this set after a timeout to push the lead to four points. They "screen their way into" a horns set, set a backscreen for the point guard who screens for 3 in Flex action. 5 got it in to 3 to put the Shockers up by four with 40 seconds remaining. See More

Basketball Play - WVU Flare

WVU Flare

Andrew Greer 03/20/2015

WVU used this set to start their Round 2 game against Buffalo. The Mountaineers came out and jumped to a 3-0 lead using this quick hitter. Huggins is known for his 5 out motion offense but the use of this quick hitter caught the Bulls help side defenders in poor positioning. The cross followed by flare screen gave WVU and early, wide open 3. See More

Basketball Play - Double HI Ballscreen

Double HI Ballscreen

Gibson Pyper 03/20/2015

Belmont runs good action out of their transition attacking. Typically using a Drag screen to free up the PG. In this set, the PG looks to come off a Drag screen and kick to the wing. On the kick both 4 & 5 set a Double HI Ballscreen and look to slip it and 1/3 space on the wing in corner. Because Belmont has almost all shooter on the floor, it results in a lot of space to attack from. See More

Basketball Play - Belmont Slip

Belmont Slip

Gibson Pyper 03/20/2015

Belmont ran Pindown DHO action to open the game for the first couple of sets. On the first set, it was a quick shot. The next set they ran it into a high ballscreen, but because of Belmont's great 3 point shooting at almost every position the floor was spread. The player setting the high ballscreen noticed his defender was over helping and so he sprinted to the rim quickly for a layup. See More

Basketball Play - WVU 1-4 High

WVU 1-4 High

Andrew Greer 03/20/2015

WVU quick hitter used late in the 1st half against Buffalo. WVU was 3/9 from 3 in the first half and used this set to assert themselves in the paint. This quick hitter uses a guard cross followed by a dive and back screen. Buffalo eventually went to 2-3 zone in the first half to counter the offensive attack of the Mountaineers. See More

Basketball Play - Northern Iowa Elbow Pop STS

Northern Iowa Elbow Pop STS

Randy Sherman 03/20/2015

Northern Iowa used this box set to quiet a Wyoming run. The set has two primary looks: 5 on the post up coming off the downscreen into the post and 2 with a catch and shoot opportunity coming off the STS action. 2 is a better screening target if he sets a great backscreen. If he sets a good backscreen for 5 and causes the hedge from his defender and give 4 a good screening angle. See More

Basketball Play - UNI High Stack

UNI High Stack

Wes Kosel 03/20/2015

Northern Iowa has been running some great sets in the game against Wyoming. In this play, UNI gets to an overload out of a high stack set. The point guard dribbles left as 4 cuts down into the low post. The initial scoring look is to try to hit 4 on the cut or posting up. If nothing is there, the ball is reversed and 4 sets a back-screen for 3 on the wing. 5 screens the screener (4), and 2 has two options to pass to for a shot. See More

Basketball Play - WVU Triple Screen BLOB

WVU Triple Screen BLOB

Andrew Greer 03/20/2015

West Virginia continued to stretch their 1st half lead out with the BLOB set making a wide open 3 from the ball side wing. I have seen this play used by multiple teams with various wrinkles. In this set the 3 seals or opens up to the rim. In most cases, one of the bigs 4/5 will dive toward the rim after the initial double screen. See More
