Basketball Play - Boston Celtics "Punch Rip Turn"

Boston Celtics "Punch Rip Turn"

Gibson Pyper 02/26/2016

When the Celtics need a quick score for 2 they run backscreen out of a post up from a guard. Since the Celtics have versatility Stevens typically runs Evan Turner off a screen into the post, and the big then sets a backscreen for a guard at the top of the key. This option will not be there every time, so the big then continues and turns to set a pindown screen for the guard in the corner to look to get a jump shot off a curl cut. If all of these options are covered, he lets the player in the post go 1 on 1 and try to get a score. See More

This is my favorite Brad Stevens set that he runs at the end of games when his team needs a 3 point shot and it almost always results in an open look for Avery Bradley. Beginning with the player you want to receive the flare screen, he zipper cuts to the top of the key as a decoy. After the zipper cut, a guard on the weakside block sets a backscreen for a big (3-4 man) to cut toward the rim on the opposite side of the key and receive a pass. After the big catches the pass, the other big man sets a flare screen for the initial guard to get an open look from 3. See More

Basketball Play - Boston Celtics "Chicago Flare"

This set is designed to get misdirection action before a flare screen for Jae Crowder. Both bigs at the elbows, one receives the pass and Crowder looks to screen away for the point guard. This is misdirection action and is looking to freeze his defender before flaring off a screen from the opposite big to get an open shot. See More

The Celtics run this set to get Isaiah Thomas a shot going to his left hand. Isaiah Thomas brings the ball up and passes to 2 who zipper cuts lane line extended, then receives the pass and hits the elbow man opposite him. He then cuts over top as the opposite big screens away for Isaiah Thomas going to his left (helpful because he is left handed), and the big with the ball hands off to Isaiah Thomas for a quick shot. Basketball Play - Boston Celtics "Zipper Short Hand Off"

Boston Celtics "Zipper Short Hand Off"

The only reason this isn't my number one set is because it is not as effective as the number one set, and it is not run as often. This is a great variation off of the "Fist Up Short" set the Phoenix Suns and Steve Nash ran against teams that hard hedge. Instead of looking for the big on the roll, the "Short" man receives the pass and then hands it off to a guard. The best part is the guards are going to their strong hand attacking the rim, Isaiah Thomas to his left & Marcus Smart to his right. See More

This was another great set to get an open three pointer. Having Marcus Smart pass to the elbow and do a fake handoff with Amir Johnson distracted the defense from the off ball screen Isaiah Thomas was being run through. This allowed Amir Johnson to make an easy decision by hitting Thomas for the open three. This would be a great set to run before ending a quarter or half. See More
