Matt Hackenberg 12/11/2021

In this diagram and embedded video we look at an empty post 5 Out Motion Offense. The concept is simple - pass and screen away. We look at the options that evolve from reading the defense and making complimentary cuts to attack the defense. The diagram desriptions and video show you everything you need to know. Basketball Play - Horns Set Play: "Circle"

Horns Set Play: "Circle"

Matt Hackenberg 12/12/2021

This is a set play out of a horns alignment we use with multiple options. First, we use the alignment to let a playmaker attack and read the defense with the horns ball screen, roll/pop action. We want to play off the ball handler, and if we can't create a shot off the initial attack, look to play 4 around 1 with our big to get it inside. Then we look at a couple simple set options that play off of the base action. Video clip below. Basketball Play - Box "Slice" Series: 5 Options

Box "Slice" Series: 5 Options

Matt Hackenberg 12/12/2021

We used a box set with the same initial action to start each play, and then used a numbering system to decide which option we would use. The series sets up multiple back doors, a rejected ball screen to an empty baseline and a stagger screen. I've had this installed every year I've been a head coach, and it works like a charm. Using the same movement pattern for each play allows you to install one play with five different options. Video clip below. Basketball Play - Zone Offense: Baseline Overload - "Kentucky"

Zone Offense: Baseline Overload - "Kentucky"

Matt Hackenberg 12/14/2021

We used this set to overload the baseline against a 3-2 or 2-3 zones. Our objective is to get the ball to the middle, but sometimes the corner three is there if the defense doesn't shift correctly. The timing of 5's seal is key to getting the curl into the middle. Once the ball goes to the middle, there are great opportunities to score or skip the ball. See video clip below. Basketball Play - Zone Lob: "Irish"

Zone Lob: "Irish"

Matt Hackenberg 12/15/2021

This diagram and embedded video is a simple set play to screen the back side forward and distract the middle defender in order to lob behind a 2-3 or 3-2 zone. We usually try this once or twice any time we play against zone teams. It works fairly well to steal an easy bucket. The toughest part of executing the action is the timing and accuracy of the pass. Basketball Play - Horns: Push Slice STS

Horns: Push Slice STS

Matt Hackenberg 12/25/2021

In this diagram and video clip we see a set out of a horns alignment. The set wants the defense to help on the screen in the paint, so that they are late getting through the screen-the-screener action. Against switching defenses, 5 wants to screen their own defender to free up the shooter. Video below. Basketball Play - Delay Game: 4 Corners

Delay Game: 4 Corners

Matt Hackenberg 12/28/2021

In this diagram and video clip we see a delay game strategy to control the clock, shorten the game, and make your opponent overextend. This strategy can be lethal when executed properly. It is dependent on not having a shot clock, but can be used with a shot clock, just without as deep of a threat. Video below. Push Zip Iverson Series - Blind Pig

Matt Hackenberg 12/31/2021

In this diagram and video clip we see a series of plays from the push zip Iverson movement series. The featured action in the video is the blind pig backdoor. This is a clever action, and with good timing it can be very tough to defend. Basketball Play - Central Arkansas - Circle Motion: Corner Backdoor

Central Arkansas - Circle Motion: Corner Backdoor

Matt Hackenberg 01/05/2022

In this diagram and embedded video we look at a set play out of the Circle Motion Offense. This set play comes from Central Arkansas, and has a misdirection backdoor option. I like this action sprinkled in here and there to catch the defense off guard. The more often you try to run this set, the less often it will work successfully. Basketball Play - Chino Hills '15-16: Press Defense

Chino Hills '15-16: Press Defense

Matt Hackenberg 01/08/2022

BLOG & PLAYBOOK - Chino Hills Huskies: The Scheme Behind the Ball Brothers In this embedded video and diagram we look at the press defense of the 35-0, state championship Chino Hills team of 2015-16. Its press was one of the featured items of the CH system, following behind transition offense. Chino Hills wanted to play at a maximum pace, and its 2-2-1 3/4 court press was a major reason it could create so many turnovers and play at a fast pace. Video clip below. Basketball Play - Push Swing Flare

Push Swing Flare

Matt Hackenberg 02/14/2022

In today’s diagram and embedded video we look at a clever action. This play has some interesting actions. The cut by 4 to get get open for the swing is pretty unique, as well as the 5 receiving a screen from the 1 on the flare. The action is pretty dependent on 5 flashing to get open, so that would need to be a point of emphasis.
