Basketball Play - DDM Quick Hitter: Stagger Away

DDM Quick Hitter: Stagger Away

Matt Hackenberg 01/24/2022

In this diagram and embedded video we look at a set play out of a box alignment. The wing entry and over cut acts as a misdirection, while the stagger screen sets up on the other side. I like this as a simple set play when you need a three. Chino Hills '15-16: Transition Offense

Matt Hackenberg 01/08/2022

BLOG & PLAYBOOK - Chino Hills Huskies: The Scheme Behind the Ball Brothers In this embedded video and diagram we look at the transition system of the 35-0, state championship Chino Hills team of 2015-16. The Chino Hills transition offense was the main feature of its system. The Huskies played as fast as anyone I've ever seen at the high school level. Matt Hackenberg 01/08/2022

BLOG & PLAYBOOK - Chino Hills Huskies: The Scheme Behind the Ball Brothers In this embedded video and diagram we look at the half court offense of the 35-0, state championship Chino Hills team of 2015-16. If you're looking for tricky sets, this isn't it. Chino Hills kept it very simple, but got a lot of mileage out of these three simple concepts. Basketball Play - 21 Series Transition Offense

21 Series Transition Offense

Matt Hackenberg 12/15/2021

The 21 series is usually a 3-player action that happens right out of transition. The bunch action makes the options easy to disguise, almost like play action fakes in football. There are a variety of actions that can come from this series, and they all develop quickly, making them ideal for teams that want to play with a fast tempo. Not all the diagrams are represented with clips in the video below, but this was all I could dig up on film. Basketball Play - "FIRE" Transition (on a Miss/TO)

"FIRE" Transition (on a Miss/TO)

Matt Hackenberg 12/11/2021

Our semi-structured break off opponent misses has become one of the calling cards of our program. Through drilling, we've trained the players to rebound, pivot their shoulders up the court and make outlet passes leading to advantage situations for our team. As an undersized team, we view this as a defense against teams crashing the offensive boards hard. Basketball Play - 4 Out, 1 In: Primary Break

4 Out, 1 In: Primary Break

Matt Hackenberg 12/10/2021

We run a structured sideline break to advance makes with pace. A commitment to run is necessary, but we only spend 7-10 minutes a day to ingrain the habits of pushing on both makes and misses. The rim sprint is the most important factor in the primary break as it leads to many easier scoring opportunities. Basketball Play - 5 Out Roll & Seal (Secondary)

5 Out Roll & Seal (Secondary)

Matt Hackenberg 12/09/2021

In this diagram and embedded video we look at a secondary action out of a 5 Out fast break where we drag screen with our post player, and then roll them into the lane. While our post player is rolling, we are creating spacing to make a post entry. Against switching ball screen defenses, this creates an easy mismatch to exploit without having to stop and set up a formal offense. Basketball Play - Shallow Brush

Shallow Brush

Matt Hackenberg 12/07/2021

In this diagram and embedded video, we have an option for using a brush screen to get a dynamic driver a gap to penetrate. If this play is well timed, it will create an advantage for the offense. I like the simplicity and the spacing. I like that it can create an advantage quickly, and doesn't require a lot of players to handle the ball. Basketball Play - 5 Out Triple Stagger DHO

5 Out Triple Stagger DHO

Matt Hackenberg 12/07/2021

In this diagram and embedded video we look at a set play out of a 5 Out alignment to create a driving gap. We pin down screen into a DHO to create the gap, and space a shooter in the corner to keep the defense honest. Basketball Play - 5 Out: False Go Flare

5 Out: False Go Flare

Matt Hackenberg 12/07/2021

In this diagram and embedded video we look at a flare screen from a 5 Out transition. It doesn’t generate the most efficient shot, but as you can see from the video, it is EXTREMELY hard to stop. If you have point guard that can really shoot it, this action can create a ton a wide open looks. Basketball Play - 41 Loop

41 Loop

Matt Hackenberg 12/06/2021

Getting space for penetration can lead to wonderful things, as we explore in this simple diagram and embedded video. Today we look at a simple movement pattern to create space for a driver to finish at the rim, or kick to a shooter. Sometimes us coaches overcomplicate things. Getting your best driver in some space to attack can be enough at times. Swing Pin Gap

Matt Hackenberg 12/06/2021

In this diagram and embedded video we look at a set play for a gap drive. I like this set and think it is unique in how it is designed. Basketball Play - Spread Ball Screen - False Motion

Spread Ball Screen - False Motion

Matt Hackenberg 12/05/2021

In this diagram and embedded video we get into a simple spread ball screen action after some false motion. I like the spacing and movement of the design. Spread ball screen concepts are penetrating high school basketball more and more. Shifting the defense before the action adds a little risk, but allows the offense to attack with the defense on the move. Basketball Play - Push Zip Iverson Series

Push Zip Iverson Series

Matt Hackenberg 11/23/2021

This is a series of plays that all originate out of the same basic movement pattern. The movement pattern masks the outcome of the play to help against teams that are well prepared through scouting. The series of plays is designed to feature a dynamic soring point guard. The push zip iverson action helps create safe movement against teams that like to pressure. I like the series of plays because it allows for creativity from a dynamic player (the side ball screen), looks for cheap points (blind pig and backdoor), and gets a shooter a a good look for three in a crafty way.
