"Iverson STS Flare" is one of my favorite ball screen sets, due to the multiple actions that occur around the ball screen. The Iverson Cut initiates the set, which is followed by a screen-the-ballscreener action. To really challenge the defense, there is a weak side flare screen, and a back screen for the ball screener. "Horns Double" is another wrinkle off of the basic "Horns Action." The set creates multiple actions, behind the ball screen. With the post player defending the ball screen, the help is eliminated on the weak side double stagger screen. If the defense recovers, the play ends with a Flare screen for the 4. This set requires the defense to have perfect switches and/or a perfect scramble rotation. As we see, throughout the history of basketball, great offense has an advantage over great defense. "Horns Flare" is a wrinkle off of the basic "Horns Action," It has two major benefits. The first is that it puts the big, who is in the middle of defending a ball screen action, into a tough defensive scramble. If read properly, this will create a big offensive advantage. It also occupies both bigs, away from the basket, which opens the lane for an aggressive drive from the guard. See More

In Game 2 of the Spurs-Rockets series, in the 2017 NBA Playoffs, Popovich ran this ATO set. It is a terrific design, based on the fact that the Spurs love to isolate Kawhi Leonard (3). On the screen-the-screener action, it looks like an isolation, but is actually a "Hammer Action." This is a screen, to set up the baseline drift pass. It resulted in a wide open 3 for Danny Green, as the Spurs opened up a 10-point halftime lead in Game 2. Look for more isolation sets, and "Hammer Actions" from the Spurs, throughout the Playoffs. Los Angeles Clippers - ATO Decoy Hammer Comeback

With the LA Clippers trailing 88-83 with 1:14 in the 4th quarter, they ran this ATO/EOG SLOB "Decoy Hammer" action against the Utah Jazz in Game 5. 2 (JJ Redick) sets a flare screen for 3 (Austin Rivers). This is decoy action as the defense has to make a decision whether to switch or not. In this case, the Jazz decide not to switch and this slight indecisveness (they switched on the 1/3 fake ball-screen action which might have caused some confusion) gave Redick space to run into a shot off of the comeback screen for 5. The Spurs trailed the Grizzlies by 3, with 22 seconds left, and had the ball on the sideline. Popovich and the Spurs are known for their "Hammer Action," which is a baseline drift play. After a zipper screen to get the ball inbounds, the Spurs designed a "Hammer Action." Behind Kawhi Leonard's drive, they set a down screen for Patty Mills. The misdirection put the Grizzlies into a defensive scramble. On the pass to Mills, Kawhi's defender left to help. Kawhi spaced to the corner, where Mills made the extra pass. This resulted in a wide open 3 for Kawhi Leonard, which tied the game. In the tough scenario of needing a 3, late in the game, the Spurs got the rare uncontested look. A great design, with tremendous execution. Despite Marc Gasol's game winning shot, handing the Spurs a loss, this was the obvious "Xs and Os Play of the Game!" See More
