Basketball Play - Flare Gate Slip SLOB

Flare Gate Slip SLOB

Matt Hackenberg 12/17/2021

In this diagram and video clip we see a SLOB to look to steal a basket with a slip set. Having the most lethal scoring option coming off the gate screen increases the chances the defense will overreact to it. I don't think it matters which of the two screeners slip, as long as both don't slip. They want to be watching their defenders, and if either one gets above the level of the screen, slip into the open space. Basketball Play - Blind Pig Backdoor SLOB

Blind Pig Backdoor SLOB

Matt Hackenberg 12/16/2021

In this diagram and video clip we see a SLOB to burn aggressive defense on a blind pig backdoor. This play is sexy when executed properly, but it is better mixed in with other options out of the same set up, instead of being a stand alone set play in your playbook. Video below. Basketball Play - Zip Slot Double Flare SLOB

Zip Slot Double Flare SLOB

Matt Hackenberg 12/16/2021

In this diagram and video clip we see a SLOB that ends in a double flare screen. I think it's an interesting action, but maybe a set to save for use at the right time instead of using it often. I think the movement pattern has great felxibility to be paired with other options that look similar in flow, but don't use the double flare. Video below. Basketball Play - Zip HO Step Up Hammer SLOB

Zip HO Step Up Hammer SLOB

Matt Hackenberg 12/16/2021

In this diagram and video clip we see a longer form SLOB to create a three-pointer off of hammer action. Sometimes I love this set, and other times, I wish it would just get to the point. I really do like flowing pattern of the set, and hammer action is one of my favorites. All of the action is set up up well using screens to make sure players are open when they need to be. Basketball Play - Curl Lob SLOB

Curl Lob SLOB

Matt Hackenberg 12/15/2021

In this diagram and video clip we see a SLOB set to try to steak a quick bucket. With a solid screen by 1 against a defense that gets through screens, this can work. I like that 1 is the player setting the back screen, loosening up the defense so that they can go catch the ball if the lob isn't there. The lob pass is critical, so you want a trusted passer to making the decision to throw the lob or not. Video clip below. Basketball Play - 5 Out DHO Flare

5 Out DHO Flare

Matt Hackenberg 12/14/2021

This set uses some misdirections to set up a flare screen for our shooter. We want to get the defense watching the ball while we set up a dribble at flare. With the space created by the flare, we want to shoot or attack the close out. Video clip below. Basketball Play - 5 Out "Backdoor" Dribble Drive

5 Out "Backdoor" Dribble Drive

Matt Hackenberg 12/10/2021

We modify our dribble drive attack from 4 Out to 5 Out and use passing and cutting to create double gaps to drive. This action works best against pressure man defense and allows for tempo control by the offense. I love the offense from a developmental standpoint, teaching cutting, catching, passing and pivoting. Basketball Play - EOQ: Elbow Pin

EOQ: Elbow Pin

Matt Hackenberg 12/08/2021

In this diagram and embedded video we look at an end of quarter set play to get a three-point shot for a shooter. Consider this play to end periods taking the final shot, while getting the shot you want for your team. It works consistently, and manages ghe end of quarter situations so they don't end up hurting your team. Box Set - Screen In Hammer Pair

Matt Hackenberg 12/07/2021

In this diagram and embedded video we look at two sets that work together to look similar, but produce different scoring opportunities. I will always be a sucker for a well executed hammer set. Basketball Play - 5 Out: Swing DHO Cross

5 Out: Swing DHO Cross

Matt Hackenberg 12/06/2021

In this diagram and embedded video, we use a 5 Out alignment to get the ball inside. What I love about this set is the little on big screen that has the potential to put the defense in a tough spot if the screen is not handled well. There are endless possibilites out of the 5 Out alignment for creative play calling. Basketball Play - Crack Down Lob BLOB vs Zone

Crack Down Lob BLOB vs Zone

Matt Hackenberg 12/02/2021

It's baffling to me how often we would score on this simple play. We used it more as a BLOB special, about once every game or so. The less often you run it, the more effective it will be. The counter action, as seen in the diagram and in the embedded video, can also create some decent looks for your team, but that action requires more work once the ball is entered than the initial action.
