This is a really well tought out set as the ball is entered on the break to the wing and then a quick screen on the trailing post leads to an early SPNR action to the open side. Fitzner can step out to shoot or roll depending on the defense plays it. If the 1st action isn't open, the ball is reversed and the passer sprints-to-screen on the ball, again a Guard-Guard action forcing the defense into a decision. If the PG cannot turn the corner, the 4 steps out to re-screen back to the two man side or the PG can attack down the lane. This is one of my favorite St.Mary's sets from Coach Bennett. See More

The St. Mary's Gaels do a very good job running their half court sets, with good patience, spacing, and ball movement, they make the defense really pay close attention especially off the ball. This set out of a Horns, is very popular at the European level right now and the first action gives you a chance for a quick hitter off the back door cut. St. Mary's has Jock Landale who can pop or roll out of the SPNR action which makes him a double threat and can open up the driving lanes for the guards too get in the paint and cause rotations, which then leads to kick-outs for their proficient shooting from behind the arc. South Carolina does an effective job running the "Nail Play" looking to get Sidarious Thornwell a quick look at an open 3. When the look isn't there, the offense continues with the Big-Big cross screen looking for a quick strike in the Post. The Gamecocks finish the set off with two PNR actions forcing defensive rotation and an open lane for 1 v 1 action from Dozier. See More

It is amazing to watch the 2017 NCAA Tournament and realize how important basic fundamentals are to the success of the teams. North Carolina ran this great ATO, which got their leading scorer a wide open look. Unfortunately, the pass was too low, and resulted in a lay-up for the other team. That does not diminish the quality of this set, which has a post up option, as well as a shot from a double stagger. Michigan beat #2 seeded Louisville, to advance to the Sweet 16 of the 2017 NCAA Tournament. Coach Pitino said,You take away Michigan's right-hand, you have a very good chance of stopping them off the bounce.This was in reference to Louisville's struggles to keep Michigan from getting to their right hand. It is no coincidence that Michigan is able to accomplish this, despite their opponents knowing about this strength. The Wolverines do some things, which enable them to maximize their ability to get to their right hand.
