Basketball Play - Texas Tech Red Raiders - Motion Sample: Step Up

Texas Tech Red Raiders - Motion Sample: Step Up

Dave Nedbalek 04/08/2019

This is another preview of an action that is beautiful that occurred organically in the Texas Tech motion offense. Of all the actions we prepare our team to guard, we don't guard post up defense to pin down into a double step-up ball screen very well. This action puts great pressure on the rim because of both the athletic ability of Tariq Owens and the vision and beautiful pass by Matt Mooney. Basketball Play - Texas Tech Red Raiders - Motion Sample: Kitchen Sink

Texas Tech Red Raiders - Motion Sample: Kitchen Sink

Dave Nedbalek 04/08/2019

This is a sample of the Texas Tech true motion offense. This is not a set play but a picture of the sequences of actions you will have to guard when facing them. In one possession you have to guard: a drag screen, flare screen, slipped step-up screen, a pick & pop, and one last flare screen by the 5 to empty the paint. The spacing struggles at times but they force you into uncommon situations and actions that it presents the opportunity for miscommunication and scoring opportunities. Basketball Play - Texas Tech Red Raiders - Motion Floppy Flare

Texas Tech Red Raiders - Motion Floppy Flare

Dave Nedbalek 04/08/2019

This is a sample of the organic nature of the Texas Tech offense. It is hard to know whether or not this is a designed action after the floppy with Culver due to the constant player freedom to screen off ball at any time but this does give you a preview of the certain type of actions you will be responsible to communicate through and guard when playing vs. Texas Tech. Basketball Play - Denver Nuggets - Motion Off-Ball PNR

Denver Nuggets - Motion Off-Ball PNR

Matt Barnthouse 11/28/2018

The Denver Nuggets took advantage of their versatile lineup on this play during a 117-85 win over the Los Angeles Lakers on November 27th. It takes principles of a basic "pass and cut" motion offense, along with dribble penetration and pick and roll concepts. It starts out with passes and cuts, but then Jamal Murray (1) cuts back while Nikola Jokic (5) screens, starting a pick and roll action off after Murray receives a pass from Paul Millsap (3). This confuses the Lakers defense, which does not switch, and LeBron James, who is defending 4, is late on the rotation leading to a layup for Murray. The advantage of having bigs that can shoot is that if LeBron rotated earlier, Murray could've passed to either Juan Hernangomez (4) or Malik Beasley (2) in the corner for a catch and shoot opportunity. Sharing the ball forces the defenders to make decisions. The more decisions that have to be made, the more chances for an error that an offense can take care of. Having versatile players like the Nuggets do makes those defensive decisions so much tougher (do I stay on my guy and perhaps leave him open for a 3? Do I help?), which can often lead to these late rotations and result in buckets. See More

Basketball Play - Maryland Terrapins - Basic Motion

Maryland Terrapins - Basic Motion

Dave Nedbalek 10/31/2018

This is an attempt to scout an initial action that Marlyand will start their true motion with. They run a true free flowing motion offense which has very little consistent patterns, and consists of many off ball screens and various combinations of those. This is a great offense in terms of the inability to scout it, and the constant burden of communication it places on the defense. Basketball Play - Houston Rockets - Motion Corner 3

Houston Rockets - Motion Corner 3

Matt Barnthouse 10/31/2018

The Houston Rockets use an interesting lineup for this play. All five of the players in this set are in the 6'5-6-8" range, which allows for versatility when moving the ball around. This play may look complex from all of the movement, but in reality, the Rockets just follow the principles of moving the ball, and moving off-ball to where there is space. All five players are involved in some capacity, so it requires mental focus of the entire team. PJ Tucker (5) does a nice job passing into a screen, which allows Michael Carter-Williams to get around, draw 3 defenders, and find an open Gary Clark in the corner. This is also a good play to run if you wish to save a player's energy, because the 2 does not have to move much at all on this play outside of a pass in the beginning. See More

Basketball Play - 5 Out Motion Offense: Middle Push Reads

5 Out Motion Offense: Middle Push Reads

KJ Smith 08/14/2018

The following reads are made in both the primary and secondary break. They can be the building blocks of an entire offensive system while developing the IQ and skill sets of your players. Circle: Corner player cuts to the rim as the wing player fades towards the corner for a shot. Drop: Wing player dives to the rim as the corner player lifts up to the wing for a shot. Down: Wing down screen towrads the corner where that player may fill up to the rim for a shot as well as curl or backdoor cut to the rim. The screener will either slip to the rim or pop out to the perimeter. Up: Corner lifts up to flare screen for the wing before slipping to the basket. The cutter may also curl to the rim. If the flare screener does not slip to the basket, they may sprint to the ball for a dribble handoff. See More
