The Toronto Raptors have used this play for the past several seasons when they are inbounding the ball from the sideline while facing a short clock situation. While the primary objective is generally for DeMar DeRozan to get a quick two, they have added wrinkles over time where a lob pass, as well as a DHO with the inbounder, have been explored. Overall, the play has the ability to be adjusted for specific personnel. A down screen is set by the 5 (or the team's best screen-setter), while a back screen is set by the 2 (primary target) on the weak side of the floor. These are generally used as decoy actions to tug defender's out of position for subsequent actions. 5 engages in a screen-the-screener action while 2 cuts towards the inbounder. The inbounder can pass to the 2, whose momentum should take them to the rim or to the baseline for a jumper. Additionally, the 5 can slip the screen against an aggresive defense and look for a lob pass at the rim. If those options cannot be succesfully explored, 1 quickly passes the ball to 5 as they flash to the strong side elbow to engage in a DHO. See More

The Spurs were very effective with this SLOB against the Heat. Lamarcus Aldrige was playing the 4 spot in this lineup, Danny Green was at the 2, Gasol at the 5, Patty Mills at the 1, and Kyle Anderson took the ball out as the 3. Your best shooter is opposite of where the ball is being inbounded. Your best ball handler or decision maker comes off the pindown. Your most skilled big sets the ball screen and pop. The big does not want to roll in this situation (unless the defense switches little on big) to enable the spacing that the guard needs to get down hill to make a decision to score. See More

Option 2: 4 comes off 1 man's screen to the rim as 5 flashes to the ball to occupy the defense. If neither option is open then pass to the 5 man. The 5 man executes a dribble hand off (DHO) with the 3 man. After the DHO, 5 man comes off 1's screen and 2 man comes off baseline screen from 4 man. Here is an excellent sideline out of bounds I've seen coach Sherri Coale run over the years. I've added a few of my own wrinkles to it but its a great play with multiple options. Initial set up is a your best shooter at the FT line and best finishing guard around the slot area. Both post players are positioned on the blocks. 3 player times cut and waits for 5 to flash for basketball similar to the blind pig action in the flex offense. The point guard passes to the post player flashing to the elbow and the post immediately looks to hit the 3 man on a backdoor (vs. aggressive defense). If the backdoor is not available, the point guard receives a dribble handoff (DHO) from the post player. After receiving the DHO, the point guard stretches the play out while the 4 man flashes to the block for a potential post pass. The 5 man will then receive a back screen from the shooter for a potential lob pass. 2 shapes up after backscreen and looks for a shot or immediately looks to dribble over and post the mismatch. If the guard cannot get the ball to the post player due to being fronted, then the weakside big flashes to catch and immediately throw a high-low pass into the post. See More

The Dallas Mavericks were tied with 4.1 seconds left in the 2017 Orlando NBA Summer League championship game and unable to advance the ball to the front court with a timeout. They ran this play to get 1 the ball on the run to get a look at a shot. The Pistons defended this by not playing x4 on the ball and keeping him at halfcourt to shadow the ball handler. This slowed down 1, but he was still able to get off a shot as time expired. See More
