Basketball Play - Las Vegas Aces - Floppy High Low

Las Vegas Aces - Floppy High Low

Matt Wheeler 09/19/2019

The Las Vegas Aces like to play with two post players who are comfortable around the basket. This is one of their sets that they frequently run to get their posts in a high/low situation. The play starts in a floppy action with 2 cutting off the screen from 3 and 5 to receive the pass on the wing. In a typical "floppy" play, 3 would then cut to the other side of the court off a screen from 4. This time 3 cuts to the ball side corner. This clears the extra defender out of the area so the Aces can get a look in the post off the high/low. See video below. See More

Basketball Play - Connecticut Sun - Dive PNR Runner

Connecticut Sun - Dive PNR Runner

Matt Wheeler 09/19/2019

Connecticut has a unique advantage with a 6'6" center, Jonquel Jones, as one of their better three-point shooters. This play starts out with Jones (5) diving to the basket as 1 dribbles at her. 1 then comes back to the left side of the floor off the ball screen from 4. 5 cuts to the corner off the baseline screen from 2. By having a perimeter player set the last screen, it forced a late switch, giving Jones the size advantage to get off the shot. See video clip below. See More

Basketball Play - Spain - Spain PNR BLOB

Spain - Spain PNR BLOB

Zachary Weir 09/11/2019

This is a very well executed BLOB by the Spanish Men's National Team. A 1-5 spread PNR, between Ricky Rubio and Willy Hernangomez, where Spain executes the "Spain " action leading to an open look. The designed back screen or "Spain " action is set by a shooter and forces the defense to make some tough decisions. See video clip below. ----- Blog Post: The Evolution of Spain PNR Action See More

Basketball Play - Team USA - PNR Twist vs Zone

Team USA - PNR Twist vs Zone

Matt Wheeler 09/11/2019

Team USA used multiple strategies to try to combat the zone defense that Turkey played throughout most of their World Cup game. In this play the two ball screens resulted in Kemba Walker (1) being matched up against a post player in the middle of Turkey's zone. On the first ball screen from 4, x1 fought through the screen to get back matched up with 1. 4 cut to the wing to occupy x2 and keep him from providing help on the second screen. When 1 dribbled off the screen from 5 to the middle of the floor, he was able to attack x5 one on one fand use his quickness advantage to get a basket. Basketball Play - Icing Wing Ball Screens (ICE)

Icing Wing Ball Screens (ICE)

Irvin Jerry 09/06/2019

Wing ball screens can be difficult to guard especially verse teams that run them frequently in their sets or run pick & roll motion. We went to icing wing ball screens to limit their effectiveness. Benefits of this defensive strategy: 1) You keep the ball on the wing, shrink the court and make the ball handler play in a crowd. 2) There are not many guards that excel at the off the dribble mid-range pull up. 3) With the rise in analytics more and more coaches discourage the mid range pull up. 4) The forward/center is limited to mid-range jumpers and threes. 5) Although the three-ball is shot at an increasing clip, there are not many centers that we face that will shoot a high percentage from three. We are ok with the other team's center taking contested threes and mid-range jumpers. In fact most of the centers we face don't shoot them at all or are reluctant. 6) Limiting the shot options to contested threes and mid-range jumpers by the ball handler and forward, the other players that are accustomed to getting kick out threes aren't in rhythm when they finally get touches. 7) Not many teams know how to counter icing wing ball screens. So some coaches will just stop running plays that have wing on ball screens because you can blow up an entire play and stagnate their offense by not letting the wing ball screen happen. See video below for examples. See More
