Favorite Send to FastDrawA set designed to get a DEEP post catch! Tennessee is the best team in the country at getting deep post position using physical duck ins. I call this a "False Motion" set because it uses actions to disguise what they want to get to in the end, in this example Coach Rick Barnes uses a baseline runner to get a deep post look. After 3 screens, in he gets his defender to relax and then ducks in the paint for a catch. Click for more NCAA Top 25 XsOs! See More
Favorite Send to FastDrawTennessee will run this action in its secondary transition. Getting the ball reversed with timing is key! The Vols tight curl off the first screener, and are physical when they cut. Sprinting through cuts is a great habit to teach players at any level. In this action, if the first cutter is not open, it turns into a single pin down for 1. Click for more NCAA Top 25 XsOs! See More
Favorite Send to FastDrawAnother staple of Tennessee's offense is the combination of down screens followed by flex screens on the weak side. Once again, with Grant Williams and Admiral Schofield as screeners, it makes it extremley difficult for defenders to get through. A key to this specific action is 3 must set up his defender by getting below the level of the screen and then sprinting off of the screener shoulder to shoulder. How does tennessee make these simple actions so effective? Simple, physical screens and physical cuts! Click for more NCAA Top 25 XsOs! See More
Favorite Send to FastDrawTennessee loves to use pin downs in secondary transition. With Grant Williams as the screener, the action is a nightmare for defenders to get around. The key to this pin down is the weak side offensive players must exchange. I call this "occupying the help." Click for more NCAA Top 25 XsOs! See More
Favorite Send to FastDrawIn this John Beilien out of bounds play, the 5 is sometimes open. The 2 is a great option for a three. But usually, the 4 slipping to the basket after setting the screen for 2 is where teams get the most scoring opportunities. Click for more Michigan Wolverines XsOs! Favorite Send to FastDrawThis is a situation where having a 4 that can handle the ball can make your offense dynamic. On this play, Aaron Gordon acts as point guard, running a basic Pick and Roll with Nikola Vucevic, along with some added motion with the 1 and 2. This accomplishes a few things: A) The beginning of the set looks almost as if the point guard is coming up to take the ball, which forces the defense to anticipate. B) Having the 4 as the ball handler, 1 off the ball, and the 3 stuck in the corner puts Russell Westbrook and Paul George off the ball, allowing the offense to attack the Thunder's weaker players. C) A taller player can simply see the roll man better and deliver a nice pass that goes through the help defense in a way that a smaller player may not be able to do. D) The off-ball motion during the roll forces defenders to keep their attention on their assignments away from the ball. While this play requires players with unique skillsets, the concepts can be translated to just about any level, the idea that having a ball handler who is not the typical ball handler can be used to exploit weaknesses in the defense in ways that only using a traditional point guard cannot.
