Basketball Play - Horns Ball Screen Pin Down

Horns Ball Screen Pin Down

Matt Hackenberg 12/08/2021

In this video we look at using a horns alignment to execute a play with multiple options to create a shot. Players can use the ball screen to score, hit a shooter coming off a pin down on the back side, or hit the roll man, although that didn’t happen in this film. With a good decision making lead guard, I think this action is a winner. Basketball Play - DHO Swing Brush Screen

DHO Swing Brush Screen

Matt Hackenberg 12/08/2021

In this diagram and embedded video we have a set play to get a dynamic driver some space to operate. The play uses some false motion to open space up for a brush screen to be used to try to create an advantage to drive to the basket. I love these gap drive actions to take some pressure off the driver, and make the defense execute with the brush screen. Basketball Play - 1-4 High: Slip Spread

1-4 High: Slip Spread

Matt Hackenberg 12/08/2021

In this diagram and embedded video we try to steal some points with a set play designed to slip a ball screener to the rim. As simple as the action is, it works far more often than you think it might. It flows right into a spread ball screen option if the cheap points don't materialize. Basketball Play - 1-2-2 Flex Offense Entry

1-2-2 Flex Offense Entry

Matt Hackenberg 12/07/2021

In this diagram and embedded video we are looking at an entry into the flex offense. This is a methodical continuity set, aimed at getting the defense to slip up on defending screens off the ball. I like all the cutting, screening and movement. I think it limits penetration opportunities to a certain extent, and makes your players a bit robotic running the pattern. But time has proven, the flex offense can be very effective, especially at the high school level. Basketball Play - Slice Stagger Continuity

Slice Stagger Continuity

Matt Hackenberg 12/07/2021

This action in the diagram and embedded video uses a hard curl on a slice screen to try to put pressure on the defense. If the screen is solid and the cut hard, it sets up a stagger screen very well. Box Set - Screen In Hammer Pair

Matt Hackenberg 12/07/2021

In this diagram and embedded video we look at two sets that work together to look similar, but produce different scoring opportunities. I will always be a sucker for a well executed hammer set. Basketball Play - Shallow Brush

Shallow Brush

Matt Hackenberg 12/07/2021

In this diagram and embedded video, we have an option for using a brush screen to get a dynamic driver a gap to penetrate. If this play is well timed, it will create an advantage for the offense. I like the simplicity and the spacing. I like that it can create an advantage quickly, and doesn't require a lot of players to handle the ball. 5 Out Triple Stagger DHO

Matt Hackenberg 12/07/2021

In this diagram and embedded video we look at a set play out of a 5 Out alignment to create a driving gap. We pin down screen into a DHO to create the gap, and space a shooter in the corner to keep the defense honest. Basketball Play - Drill: Interior Touch Series

Drill: Interior Touch Series

Matt Hackenberg 12/07/2021

In this diagram and embedded video we go through a series of drills we used with our post players during our guard/post breakdown portion of practice. We believed that using these basic drills on a regular basis would improve the footwork and touch of our interior players. We used medicine balls instead of basketballs while we filmed this, but that was not a regular occurrence. Basketball Play - Push Zip Iverson Series

Push Zip Iverson Series

Matt Hackenberg 12/07/2021

In this diagram and embedded video we look at a series of plays that all play off of each other. The series uses the same movement pattern to make it difficult for the defense to understand what is going to happen through scouting. Some of the these actions are pretty clever! Weak Hand Dribbling Circuit

Matt Hackenberg 12/07/2021

In this diagram and embedded video we look at a skill development drill to work on developing a player’s weak hand dribbling. It is an “on air” drill aimed at developing dribbling technique. This drill can be used all the way up to varsity level, but is best suited for youth levels, middle school and sub-varsity. The video explains in more detail. Basketball Play - 5 Out: False Go Flare

5 Out: False Go Flare

Matt Hackenberg 12/07/2021

In this diagram and embedded video we look at a flare screen from a 5 Out transition. It doesn’t generate the most efficient shot, but as you can see from the video, it is EXTREMELY hard to stop. If you have point guard that can really shoot it, this action can create a ton a wide open looks. Basketball Play - 41 Loop

41 Loop

Matt Hackenberg 12/06/2021

Getting space for penetration can lead to wonderful things, as we explore in this simple diagram and embedded video. Today we look at a simple movement pattern to create space for a driver to finish at the rim, or kick to a shooter. Sometimes us coaches overcomplicate things. Getting your best driver in some space to attack can be enough at times. Basketball Play - 5 Out: Swing DHO Cross

5 Out: Swing DHO Cross

Matt Hackenberg 12/06/2021

In this diagram and embedded video, we use a 5 Out alignment to get the ball inside. What I love about this set is the little on big screen that has the potential to put the defense in a tough spot if the screen is not handled well. There are endless possibilites out of the 5 Out alignment for creative play calling. 4 Out: DHO Back Screen Cross Screen

Matt Hackenberg 12/06/2021

In this diagram and embedded video we look at a set play out of a 4 Out transition that creates a guard cross screening for a post. I like how the back screen frees up the post player to catch the ball in prime position to read the cross screen.
