Basketball Play - Oklahoma State Flex Slide Hand-Off

Oklahoma State Flex Slide Hand-Off

Wes Kosel 03/20/2015

Oklahoma State used this flex option early when Oregon was playing man to man defense. The Cowboys didn't get a good shot since they gave up on the play after the hand-off (they did not get to the screen for Forte at the end). However, this is a good play to get Forte (2) open for a shot. The play starts in traditional flex with the ball moving from right to left. Instead of 1 setting the down-screen for the flex screener inside, 1 slides to the right wing as 4 sets the down-screen. Once 5 gets the ball at the top of the key, he dribbles right to give 1 the ball on a dribble hand-off. At the same time, Forte sets a cross-screen in the post then cuts to the wing off of a down-screen from 5. This play is difficult to guard because 5's defender has to worry about the hand-off and then react to Forte cutting to the wing. See More

Basketball Play - UNI High Stack

UNI High Stack

Wes Kosel 03/20/2015

Northern Iowa has been running some great sets in the game against Wyoming. In this play, UNI gets to an overload out of a high stack set. The point guard dribbles left as 4 cuts down into the low post. The initial scoring look is to try to hit 4 on the cut or posting up. If nothing is there, the ball is reversed and 4 sets a back-screen for 3 on the wing. 5 screens the screener (4), and 2 has two options to pass to for a shot. See More

Basketball Play - Kansas Zone Post Hook

Kansas Zone Post Hook

Wes Kosel 03/20/2015

We are seeing some great zone quick hitters from Bill Self in this game. In this play, Kansas runs a guard across the floor to the ball-side corner. With this cut, the bottom outside zone defender moves out to the corner to protect against the shot. 5 screens in on the middle zone defender as 4 flashes to the ball for an open shot. See More

Basketball Play - Kansas Zone Lob

Kansas Zone Lob

Wes Kosel 03/20/2015

Kansas ran this play in the second half against New Mexico State. The play uses a dribble entry from Mason (1) from left to right. The dribble pushes Oubre (3) to the corner and sends Seldon (2) into the lane and back out to the perimeter. Mason passes to Seldon shifting the defense towards the ball. Oubre sneaks in behind the defense as 4 and 5 screen the bottom zone defenders. In the game, Seldon made the lob pass to Oubre with Oubre missing the dunk, but a good idea by Bill Self. See More

Basketball Play - New Mexico State Box Pinch Post

New Mexico State Box Pinch Post

Wes Kosel 03/20/2015

New Mexico State is staying in the game by being patient on offense and waiting for open shots. In this box set play, the guards start at the elbows with 2 screening down for 4. 5 and 3 then screen the screener with a double screen on the opposite block. Now the point guard has the option to hit 2 for a shot on the wing or pass to 4 at the pinch post. In the game, 4 got the ball and looked to drive to the basket after 1 cut through the lane. The play starts with the point guard dribbling to the right as if he is going to use the ball-screen from 4. Instead, 4 slips the screen to the opposite block. 1 uses the ball-screen from 5 and looks for 4 posting up inside. If 4 isn't open, 1 looks to pass to 2 cutting up off of a down screen from 5. Basketball Play - 1998 Valpo Bryce Drew Game-Winning Shot

1998 Valpo Bryce Drew Game-Winning Shot

Wes Kosel 03/20/2015

In the spirit of March Madness, let's take a trip back in time to 1998 when Bryce Drew hit the game winning shot over Ole Miss. The play starts with 2.5 seconds left on the clock and Valpo down by 2 points. Homer Drew draws up a brilliant last-second play throwing the ball the length of the court to his 4 man. While in the air, Bill Jenkins made the pass to Bryce Drew on the wing. Bryce Drew hit the shot sending Valpo on their Cinderella run to the Sweet 16. The Crusaders were a #13 seed defeating #4 seed Ole Miss. Valpo will open the tournament against Maryland today. Bryce is now the head coach of the Crusaders. Just for kicks, I threw in a counter option with the inbounder running the baseline. See More

NC State used this play early in the 1st half to get an open shot for Trevor Lacey. The play starts with an entry pass to the wing and a UCLA cut from 1 to the low post. Once 3 (Lacey) gets the ball at the top of the key, he has the option to pass to 1 for a shot or to pass to 4 flashing to the pinch post. Basketball Play - Butler Point Flare

Butler Point Flare

Wes Kosel 03/19/2015

Butler used this play mid-way through the second half and got a good look on dribble penetration after the flare screen. The play starts with dribble entry to the right as 2 and 3 switch sides of the floor. The first scoring option is 3 in the corner for a shot. If that isn't open, 1 passes to 4 at the opposite elbow. Basketball Play - Texas Elbow Quick Stagger

Texas Elbow Quick Stagger

Wes Kosel 03/19/2015

Texas used this play early in the second half to get an open shot for Holmes. Ridley was called for an illegal screen, but Texas should continue with actions similar to this and force Butler to chase Jonathan Holmes around screens. If Ridley holds the screen, it will be difficult for defenders to get around him. The play starts with an entry pass to 4 at the high post. 5 (Ridley) sets an up-screen for the point guard then both 1 and 5 set a staggered screen for Holmes in the corner. See More
