This is a Box Set run by the Illini last night in their game against Indiana. A good set that incorporates the use of the ball screen to set-up a weak side double stagger freeing up their talented shooter Rice. The play doesn't end with the shot as the ball is reversed and what looks like a SPNR action turns into an open side penetration. Groce does a great job utilizing the box in their offensive system and this is a play with multiple scoring possibilities
The play begins with both big men setting elbow screens for the guards to get free on the wings
1 (Abrams - 13) passes to 2 (Rice - 24) and cuts to the weak side corner
5 (Morgan - 22) sets a FT line cross screen for 4 (Ekey - 33) who sprints into a SPNR with 2 (Rice - 24)
2 (Rice - 24) comes off the screen and passes to 5 (Morgan - 22) popping out behind the 3 pt line
4 (Ekey - 33) a good 3 pt shooter pops off the screen looking for a quick pass
5 (Morgan - 22) goes into a DHO with 1 (Abrams - 13) as 3 (Bertrand - 2) cuts backdoor on the dribble by 5 (Morgan - 22)
2 (Rice - 24) after passing cuts into the paint setting up the next action as he prepares to come off the double stagger screen set by 3 (Bertrand - 2) & 5 (Morgan - 22)
4 (Ekey - 33) also moves to the block
1 (Abrams - 13) passes to 2 (Rice - 24) coming off the double stagger screen for the possible shot
3 (Bertrand - 2) goes off the single screen out to the weak side wing
2 (Rice - 24) having no shot reverses the ball to 1 (Abrams - 13) who quickly throws the ball to 3 (Bertrand - 2)
4 (Ekey - 33) comes out like he is going to screen and pops out giving 3 (Bertrand - 2) the chance to drive the open side
The two weakside guards drift to fill open spaces for possible kick-out passes in a nice spacing play
