The basic set up.
x1 and x2 are normally your guards.
x3 and x4 are normally forwards.
x5 is normally your center.
On the initial pass to the wing:
x3 comes up to cover the offensive player until the ball side defender (x1) can slide over and "bump" x3 back to their original position.
The weak side guard (x2) slides over to guard the high post (elbow area), x5 slides over to protect the low post.
On a pass to the corner
x3 closes out aggressively (but under control) in a stance with high hands.
x5 fronts the low post or short corner, depending on where the offensive player is located.
x1 drops to a help position to discourage a pass to the high post and to help on any middle dribble penetration.
On a diagonal skip pass
x4 bumps up to defend wing shooter until x2 can recover and bump him/her down to their normal position.
If the ball handler dribbles across the lane, the strong side guard should stay with the offensive player, while the weak side defender slides underneath.
On a dribble to the corner, the strong side guard (x1) stays with the ball handler until the strong side forward (x3) can bump up, allowing the ball handler to be "handed off"
The opposite is true on a dribble out of the corner.
