09/06/2013Today's Play of the Day is a transition option from Fred Hoiberg and the Iowa State Cyclones for a stretch shooting big man. Hoiberg ran this set coming out of transition for his forward Georges Niang, particularly against Kansas and Jef Withey, who was exceptionally poor at defending on the perimeter. This action fits well into Hoiberg's overall motion offense, which is strongly perimeter-based. His general pattern of offense has been dubbed basketball's version of the "Spread Offense". See More

09/05/2013The Spurs ran a set similar to this for Manu Ginobili in the 2013 NBA Finals. 3, 4, and 5 need to get out of the paint to set their screens if the first entry has any chance of being open, and 2 needs to bring his defender low enough that 3's defender has to pay attention to him--that will open up the best scoring opportunity that the action offers, which is 3 at the top of the key.
