Basketball Play - Quick 3

Quick 3

Kyle Gilreath 09/17/2013

Watching the Orlando Magic vs LA Lakers 2009 NBA Finals Game 4, I thought of this action out of an alignment Stan Van Gundy had at the end of regulation. If 2 is open on the initial stagger he is an option for a quick catch & shoot but the play is really run for the 3. See More

Basketball Play - "C"

"C"

Kyle Gilreath 09/26/2013

This is another action I watched last night while watching the 1987 NBA Finals between the Lakers and Celtics. Pat Riley called out "C" as the Lakers jogged up court. 3 (Magic Johnson) came off a baseline rub that turned into a staggered pick & roll. See More

Basketball Play - 13 Hawk Down

13 Hawk Down

I love catching old (if you consider last season old) games on NBAtv and trying to find some new plays to share with my readers. Last night I watched a few minutes of a New York Knicks Playoff game. I loved this action because it involved a big screening a guard into a pick & roll taking screen the screener a step further. See More

Basketball Play - NBA Closeout Drill

NBA Closeout Drill

Kyle Gilreath 10/16/2013

I saw this drill last week while watching the 2013 NBA Real Training Camp. The drill in frame 1 is how the Brooklyn Nets were shown performing this drill. The variation in Frame 2 came from the LA Clippers. I typically have my players circle the wagons during any live 5-on-5 action that starts in the half-court, but this drill is a great simulation to work on closing out at various angles during scramble situations. Basketball Play - 13 Quick Again

13 Quick Again

Kyle Gilreath 10/22/2013

Friday night in between watching ESPNU Midnight Madness and the UCF-Louisville football game, I flipped over to the Chicago Bulls game. Tom Thibodeau runs some great offensive sets and Friday night he allowed me to add one more play to my library. The Bulls ran this play with pure perfection and timing. 1 also has the option to throwback to 3 coming off the screen from 5. See More

Basketball Play - Side T

Side T

This sideline out of bounds play is one that Eddie Jordan ran while coaching the Washington Wizards. If you need a 3 pter, 2 and 1 are obviously your first options. However, if you just need a simple score, look to hit 5 flashing back to the ball. If 5 can really seal around the rim this is a great look if you have a skilled big. Furthermore, if 5 is forced to catch in the elbow area, another option could be 4 trying to go backdoor for a lay-up. See More

Basketball Play - "Rhody"

"Rhody"

Kyle Gilreath 12/06/2013

Halfway through the 2nd half of their loss to UCONN, Florida head coach Billy Donovan called out this play to PG Scottie Wilbekin to get his Gators to run some offense for multiple looks. If you follow the Gators or Coach Donovan, you know he is one of the best at teaching and executing continuity offense. While they frequently run baseline runner/rhody actions, I love this new addition to his playbook. There are multiple scoring opportunities to attack any defensive adjustments in this action. Basketball Play - 5 Quick

5 Quick

If you are looking for some hi-lo plays for your team, spend some time watching the Bill Self's Kansas Jayhawks. He does a tremendous job putting his players into positions to create mismatches and seals and allow for simple hi-lo play. The Jayhawks ran this post-up action for Jeff Withey in the 2012 Final Four. To see EVERY play Kansas ran in the 2012 Final Four you can do so in my eBook Championship Execution! See More

Basketball Play - 5 on 4 to 5 on 5 Transition

5 on 4 to 5 on 5 Transition

Kyle Gilreath 12/30/2013

This is another drill that I got from watching Bellarmine University practice last week. This is a great drill because it not only works on scramble situations having 4 players defend 5 in the half-court, but it also forces the offense (new defense) to sprint back after change of possession to prevent any easy lay-ups. After making your one transition stop after a made shot or the defense secures the rebound and repeat the drill the other way. Make sure you switch the offense and defensive teams who must scramble each time and rotate the players that are back. Do this drill for time or until a team reaches a pre-set point total. See More

Basketball Play - V-Flare

V-Flare

Kyle Gilreath 03/04/2014

Since Coaching U released their July 2014 dates yesterday I thought it would be a perfect opportunity to share one of my favorite plays I received from Brendan Suhr. Brendan demonstrated this play during the 2011 Coaching U Live in Orlando. See More

Basketball Play - Loop Flare

Loop Flare

Kyle Gilreath 03/21/2014

In need of 2 points towards the end of the 2nd half, Arizona State’s Herb Sendek drew up this BLOB play for his Sun Devils. Watching the play develop I was sure they would get the ball to 3 curling into the lane, but they decided to wait and use the flare for 2. The shot was off target but ASU secured the offensive rebound to tie the game with two free-throws. See More

Basketball Play - Side Lob

Side Lob

Kyle Gilreath 07/09/2014

I recently watched some video from last year's Brayden Carr Foundation Coaching Clinic run by coach Jim Carr. This play came from the legendary John Lucas and is a very simple sideline out-of-bounds play from the side that gives you a lob. Main goal of this action is to get the lob to 5 at the rim. However, if the defense takes away the lob you have 4 cutting hard to the top for a catch & shoot as well. See More

Basketball Play - Slip

Slip

Kyle Gilreath 12/23/2014

UCONN's Geno Auriemma demonstrated this play this Summer at Coaching U Live in Las Vegas. This is a simple action that you get the floor moving early in the offense and keeping both bigs involved and creating hard to guard situations. As 3 comes off the pick, if X5 engages the ball and helps, a throwback to 5 may lead to a quick feed to 4. However, if 5 quickly shows and starts to get back, that is opportunity for 4 to come out and flare 5...4 has another opportunity to slip after setting the flare. See More
