Basketball Play - Hurdle Rebounding

Hurdle Rebounding

Bert DeSalvo 02/18/2016

This drill comes from George Hardison, Head Coach WBB at UConn Avery Point (NJCAA) which I witnessed at their practice on Feb. 16th, 2016. NOTE** If you do not have mini-hurdles you can use small cones. Also, depending on how high you want your players to jump you can use varied heights (6"/8"/12"). See More

Basketball Play - Knicks Triple Flat

Knicks Triple Flat

Adam Spinella 07/11/2013

The Knicks ran this play in the Eastern Conference Semifinals against the Pacers at the end of a quarter. The play was designed to get a J.R. Smith and Carmelo Anthony ballscreen in space. The play was probably designed for Carmelo to pop off the screen and isolate on the wing; instead Chandler was wide open at the rim and Melo hit him for an alley oop. See More

Basketball Play - Rub Pop Dirk

Rub Pop Dirk

Adam Spinella 07/11/2013

This was a play run at one time by the Dallas Mavericks in their 2011 NBA Championship run. The plan was to get Dirk and Kidd in a ballscreen read situation where Dirk could isolate at one of two spots on the floor and have proper spacing around him. See More

Basketball Play - Slice Read Option

Slice Read Option

Adam Spinella 07/23/2013

Last season in Cleveland, Byron Scott ran this play so he could get Kyrie coming off a re-screen action and to let Dion Waiters have the chance to work in isolation at the top of the key. When the Cavs would go small and put Wayne Ellington at the 3, defenses would have a tough time chasing their shooters off the perimeter and wrestling in the post against Thompson and Speights. Basketball Play - Huskie Low

Huskie Low

UCONN Women's Basketball Coach Geno Auriemma uses this play on occasion to free up a shooter and a post for good looks at a shot. While the PG isolates and dribbles on the wing there is a lot of misdirection action in traffic near the paint. I like to think of this play a little bit like an off-centered Triple Screen that leads into a post cross screen. See More

Basketball Play - Magic Wheel

Magic Wheel

Adam Spinella 01/03/2015

Orlando Magic Head Coach Jacque Vaughn ran this play last season for Arron Afflalo. As the team's best scorer, Afflalo could decide if he wanted the ball in the pinch post for an isolation or coming off a screen for a three-pointer - his two strengths. The play was a read-and-react for Afflalo, who read the defense and decided where he wanted to score. See More

Basketball Play - Down

Down

Adam Spinella 03/07/2015

Over the next few days we will break down some of John Wooden's favorite sets from his UCLA teams in the 1970s. Coach Wooden was incredibly accomplished, and the great leadership abilities he exhibited often overshadow the brilliant offensive contributions he has made. This play, which Coach Wooden called "Down", got an isolation post play for a wing after setting a down screen. See More

Basketball Play - Release

Release

Adam Spinella 03/16/2015

Coach Krzyzewski has had some fantastic post players over the years. From Elton Brand to Jahlil Okafor, Christian Laettner to Shelden Williams, all these players could convert at an extremely high percentage in a post-isolation situation. Coach K, in keeping with an up-tempo style of offense, got the ball into the post quickly for a clear-out situation in a play he's run for years called "release". This is a great action for a team with a dominant post scorer. If you teach 5 to engage in contact as soon as his man helps off the flex screen, he can get great, deep scoring position and have a chance to get to the free throw line or bang in a layup. See More

Basketball Play - Georgetown 5 Up Backdoor

Georgetown 5 Up Backdoor

Adam Spinella 04/12/2016

BLOB, or baseline out of bounds, plays are wonderful opportunities for a backdoor action because the defense gets sucked close to their man as they deny a pass towards the rim. Georgetown's John Thompson drew up this great set to get a backdoor out of a baseline inbound situation, sucking the entire defense away from the rim in order to do so. Thompson isolates the man guarding the inbounder as well, turning him into the help defender on a backdoor. As many coaches know and communicate to their players, the offensive player inbounding the ball is always dangerous once the ball gets inbounded. By paying too close attention to the inbounder, a defensive team will have no help at the rim on a backdoor cut. See More

Basketball Play - Mavs 15 Down

Mavs 15 Down

Adam Spinella 05/08/2016

Rick Carlisle utilizes Dirk Nowitzki as a stretch-shooting big man in a variety of ways. This set has Nowitzki coming off a down screen from the point guard, which is an incredibly difficult action to defend. Defenders of point guards are not used to hedging screens, nor are big men to trailing Nowitzki through them. A switch leaves the ball in Nowitzki's hands with a smaller defender on him, and a big man guarding a point guard on an isolated side of the floor. See More

Basketball Play - Wolves 23 Flex Clear

Wolves 23 Flex Clear

Adam Spinella 08/29/2016

With a player like Andrew Wiggins that can score inside and out, Wolves coach Sam Mitchell got creative last season with how he used Wiggins in flex situations. 23 Flex Clear is an action that can utilize Wiggins as a screener or as the post-up option in the wing. He either comes off a flex screen into a post isolation situation, or he can set a flex screen for another wing and then come off a down screen on the opposite side for a jump shot. See More
