Favorite Send to FastDrawThis is a shooting drill I started using this summer that adds decision-making for the player and holds them accountable to to be shot ready at all times. The pace of the game is always changing where players have to make quick decisions when receiving the basketball. Coaches can't stand when the ball "sticks" and there is a lack of movement. Players have to develop these reactionary skills in order to be one step ahead of the defense when receiving the ball that will not just benefit the player, but the team. Adding in "commands" where players have to process information during drills is an element that I feel will take skill development to a another level. Favorite Send to FastDrawGetting players communicating, bringing energy, and getting comfortable with the ball, feet, and sharing the ball are all things that set the tone for a great workout/practice. Here is a drill that incorporates all of these things and is one of my favorites to start with in my training sessions with players. Favorite Send to FastDraw"54 Slice" features a slice cut by 4. SLICE = involves two off-ball players and their interseciting paths to create an advantage. In Frame 1 below, 5 flashes and 4 times their cut right off the rear end of 5 in hopes of "rubbing" their man off of 5 and getting open for the 1st option. If that is not available, the action flows into spread ball screen. For more on Spread Ball Screen: Spread Ball Screen Offense Spread Ball Screen Entries See More
Favorite Send to FastDrawThe following reads are made in both the primary and secondary break. They can be the building blocks of an entire offensive system while developing the IQ and skill sets of your players. Circle: Corner player cuts to the rim as the wing player fades towards the corner for a shot. Drop: Wing player dives to the rim as the corner player lifts up to the wing for a shot. Down: Wing down screen towrads the corner where that player may fill up to the rim for a shot as well as curl or backdoor cut to the rim. The screener will either slip to the rim or pop out to the perimeter. Up: Corner lifts up to flare screen for the wing before slipping to the basket. The cutter may also curl to the rim. If the flare screener does not slip to the basket, they may sprint to the ball for a dribble handoff. See More
Favorite Send to FastDrawThe progression of drills is really effective in this Boston College "Fast Break Concepts" video created by Coach Chris Oliver of @BballImmersion. The 4v4 Transition Drill that begins at about the 7:00 mark was one that I thought was particularly useful. The Offense starts with a slight 4 v 2 advantage and seeks to make a pitch ahead pass for a score. Whether the offense misses or makes, the defense will then take the ball back up the court 4v4.
