Favorite Send to FastDrawIn today’s diagram and embedded video we look at a set play to use against zone defense. A lot of coaches use the horns alignment to ball screen against man to man, but I've found it to be useful as a zone concept as well. All you need is one little crease for the ball handler to squeeze through and you're in to the second level of the defense. Favorite Send to FastDrawUsuing the dribble against the zone Players can use the dribble against zone to manipulate pieces of the zone and apply misdirection. One of the #ZoneOffenseTips I like is the LOOP. In a loop, a player on the wing dribbles at the player on the point sending that player on the LOOP cut (Player 1). The zone would react to the dribble by moving in that direction. Then Player 2 throws back against the grain of that dribble. Misdirection = MIX See More
Favorite Send to FastDrawWe used this set to overload the baseline against a 3-2 or 2-3 zones. Our objective is to get the ball to the middle, but sometimes the corner three is there if the defense doesn't shift correctly. The timing of 5's seal is key to getting the curl into the middle. Once the ball goes to the middle, there are great opportunities to score or skip the ball. See video clip below. Favorite Send to FastDraw"Corners" is our base zone offense against 1-3-1 zone, 3-2 zone, and any type of extended half court or 3/4 court. It provides great spacing to play against any form of trapping defense with the 2-1-2 alignment. Fake passes are critical, as well as not throwing passes with a lot of loft on them. Once in the scoring area, we look to dive our high post and flash to the middle when the ball gets to the corner. Favorite Send to FastDrawThis offense was implemented to help incorporate constant screening and cutting into a continuity offense. There are options to score on cuts, post ups, down screening and slips. We've found wrinkles and set plays from within the base offense that have been effective. Favorite Send to FastDrawIn today’s diagram and embedded video we look at a zone offense scheme we called “Gaps.” We simply aligned in a 1-3-1 and used concepts to attack zone defense. We used this as our base zone offense, meaning when we saw zone, we automatically went to this concept unless I overrode it with another call. The concpet is very simple, and the details of execution are what's going to make or break the success of this concept. I liked to use this, and pair it with a set package of 4-5 plays as our zone offense playbook. Favorite Send to FastDrawThis diagram/video looks at a continuity action to run against zone defense. Every season we had a "base zone offense," meaning when we saw zone, we were automatically in that zone concept unless the play call was overridden by myself. This is a great option for a base zone offense. It has some movement, and is simple and effective. We cut a player from the back side into the middle of the zone looking for a penetrating pass into the zone. The player exiting from the middle to top tends to suck the guards out, leaving the middle more open. The embedded video shows the concept in more depth. Favorite Send to FastDrawThis is a zone set using a 1-2-2 alignment. I love the play because if nothing materializes, you are left with a 1-3-1 alignment that plays well against most zones. The ball is entered to the wing, and the wing uses a drag dribble down the sideline to shift the defense. The ball is returned to 1 who dribbles to the other side of the court while reading the defense. The action is a stagger screen with a slip into the middle of the defense. Our primary look is the slip to the middle, but we would take the stagger if the defense didn't cover it. Getting the slip in the middle opens up many options for the offense - shot, kick down, kick out. See More
