Basketball Play - Bermuda Triangle Close Out

Bermuda Triangle Close Out

FastModel Sports 04/14/2015

Start with 4 players and a coach at each basket. Three of the players start around the three point line as the offensive team…one player on each wing and one at the top of the key. The fourth player starts on defense and is under the basket with a ball. The defensive player rolls the ball out to one of the offensive players on the wing, then they close out and defend that offensive player. The defensive player is working 1-on-1 to force a bad shot and get the defensive rebound. Once the defender secures the rebound, they move on to the next offensive player by rolling them the ball and closing out on them. The defensive player must get 3 stops in a row, one from each player on offense. This is where the defense can get “caught in the Bermuda Triangle”…if you don’t get stops you will get stuck in there! Once the defender gets all 3 stops, everyone rotates one position. The drill ends when all 4 players have made their stops as the defensive player. The coach is at the basket to call fouls, which count as a score and the defender must move on to the next offensive player. See More

Basketball Play - Zone Offense: Horns Ball Screen

Zone Offense: Horns Ball Screen

Matt Hackenberg 02/09/2022

In today’s diagram and embedded video we look at a set play to use against zone defense. A lot of coaches use the horns alignment to ball screen against man to man, but I've found it to be useful as a zone concept as well. All you need is one little crease for the ball handler to squeeze through and you're in to the second level of the defense. Basketball Play - Team USA - Swing DHO Floppy vs Zone

Team USA - Swing DHO Floppy vs Zone

Matt Wheeler 09/09/2019

Team USA basketball faced a zone defense for much of their game against Turkey in the FIBA World Cup. They were down 1 late in overtime and ran this play to get a shot for Joe Harris (3) off of some movement. This is a common play that Gregg Popovich uses with the Spurs against man defense. They made some adjustments to run this as an effective play against Turkey's 2-3 zone defense. 1 reversed the ball to 5. Then 5 went into a dribble handoff with 2. but didn't need to set a good screen on x2. This allowed x2 to get through the screen and shift out of the wing area to matchup with 2 up top. 5 then screened x4 on the outside of the zone to get 3 open. This essentially forced Turkey to matchup man to man with x4 having to guard 3. x4 trailed on the screen and 3 was able to turn the corner on the catch and drive to the basket. See More

Here is a great baseline out of bounds to utilize against a switching man to man defense. Box Alignment with best shooter at the weak side elbow. 3 comes off staggered screen from 4 and 5 for a potential shot. 2 upscreens for 5 and 4 can slip the last screen if teams switch. See More

Basketball Play - KU

KU

Rory Hamilton 08/07/2015

I saw Bill Self run this a few years ago against a triangle and two and it has been in my playbook ever since. It has the same concepts as "3-low" from my previous post on attacking a box and 1 . The initial set up is a double stack low with one perimeter player being guarded man to man with the ball, and the other man to man player on the right block. Post players are positioned at both blocks and other guard not being played man to man on the left block. The play is initiated by a double screen low for the unguarded guard to go baseline and look to receive a pass for a shot. After screening the guarded player then clears out to the weak side elbow area. The ball side post player immediately screens the weak side zone defender for a baseline bounce pass while the screener flashes back to middle of the zone. The point guard then screens away for the other guarded player or they can cut through and exchange. On ball reversal, the guard comes off two baseline screens and looks to receive a pass along the baseline and the strong side post screens away and flashes back to the middle and the continuity continues. Basketball Play - Triangle and 2 Quick Hitter "Under

Triangle and 2 Quick Hitter "Under

Rory Hamilton 08/02/2015

"Under" looks to give you several different scoring options out of one play against a triange and 2 defense. The initial alignment is a 1-4 high with one of your guarded players at the point and the other at either the left or right-wing. The play starts with a pass to the high post player on the same sided as the other player being guarded man to man. The post catches and faces while strong side elbow and wing player set a double flare screen for the point guard for a potential quick shot. If the shot is not there the 3 player flashes to the block for potential low post pass if bottom triangle defender comes out. The 5 player then sprints to the wing for a PNR while the 2 and 4 player set a weak side double screen for the 3 man. The point guard comes off the PNR and looks to score, hit the post rolling or 3 player along the baseline. Once the 3 player catches along the baseline, the 4 man slides to mid post and the 2 man continues cut and sets a screen on the bottom defender bringing the 5 man right "under" the basket for a score. Basketball Play - Oklahoma State Flex Slide Hand-Off

Oklahoma State Flex Slide Hand-Off

Wes Kosel 03/20/2015

Oklahoma State used this flex option early when Oregon was playing man to man defense. The Cowboys didn't get a good shot since they gave up on the play after the hand-off (they did not get to the screen for Forte at the end). However, this is a good play to get Forte (2) open for a shot. The play starts in traditional flex with the ball moving from right to left. Instead of 1 setting the down-screen for the flex screener inside, 1 slides to the right wing as 4 sets the down-screen. Once 5 gets the ball at the top of the key, he dribbles right to give 1 the ball on a dribble hand-off. At the same time, Forte sets a cross-screen in the post then cuts to the wing off of a down-screen from 5. This play is difficult to guard because 5's defender has to worry about the hand-off and then react to Forte cutting to the wing. See More
