Basketball Play - QB Tee Drills

QB Tee Drills

Michael Bowden 11/01/2012

Recently our staff was told about a product called QB Tee by an NBA Assistant Coach who is nationally known for being one of the best in the business as far as Player Development. There are countless drills that can be used with the QB Tee and I have just included a few in the Fast Draw diagrams and video. There can be full court ball handling drills to using it for end of game situations where your players need to have that internal clock in their mind to get a shot off in time. There is a standard list of times for each drill, but from the limited experience that we have had... It is good to start with the clock high, then slowly lower it and challenge your players. *One thing to remember when using this product is that there is a difference between having great footwork and shooting efficiently - and rushing your shot to get it off in time. Quality Reps! See More

Basketball Play - Sparks Transition Set

Sparks Transition Set

Michael Bowden 10/25/2012

This is a nice transiton set that I have seen on countless NBA, WNBA and Mens and Womens NCAA teams for a couple years now. There are many options out of it and have only included a few. There are ones that include back side staggers, two man games, double post ball screens etc... This is a simple secondary set you can put into your offense that is a little more complicated than the standard transition drag screen. See More

Basketball Play - Maryland Women: Floppy Post Iso

Maryland Women: Floppy Post Iso

Michael Bowden 02/27/2012

Alyssa Thomas had 20 points and 14 rebounds, and the sixth-ranked Terrapins established command soon after the opening tip in an 84-64 rout Friday night. Alicia DeVaughn scored 14 and Laurin Mincy had 13 for the Terrapins, who never trailed after yielding the game's first point. Maryland led 11-1 after 4 minutes, 53-29 at halftime and 73-40 with 10 minutes to go. Last month, Maryland needed overtime to squeeze out a 78-72 win at North Carolina. This time, the outcome was apparent almost immediately. "We were really able to dominate right away," Terps coach Brenda Frese said. "I thought we came with the knockout punch early that they were never able to recover from." The victory pushed the Terrapins into a third-place tie with Georgia Tech in the Atlantic Coast Conference, although Maryland (24-4, 11-4) gets the tiebreaker by virtue of its sweep of the Yellow Jackets. The top four teams receive a first-round bye in next week's ACC tournament. After beating Duke and North Carolina in the span of six days, the Terrapins are riding a hot streak at just the right time. "This is how you want to finish," Frese said. "You want to be peaking come March, and this is where this team is at." Next, the Terrapins will close out the regular season Sunday with a 2 p.m. game at NC State (16-13, 5-10) in Raleigh, N.C. The Terps will head to Greensboro, N.C. next week for the ACC Women's Basketball Tournament, which begins Thursday. Their seeding, game time and opponent will be announced later this weekend or early next week. Check umterps.com for the latest information. This play, from the Maryland FastDraw playbook, isolates a post using a variety of screens.  The video below shows Long Beach State University's men's team executing the play in a game situation: See More

Basketball Play - Maryland Women: Double Double

Maryland Women: Double Double

Michael Bowden 02/08/2012

Alyssa Thomas scored 23 points and pulled down 12 rebounds, Tianna Hawkins added a career-high 23 points and the No. 8 Maryland Women (20-3, 7-3 ACC) beat No. 22 Georgia Tech 64-56 on Monday night. This hard fought contest, in which the lead changed hands eight times and the score was tied 12 times, gave the Terps their 20th win for the eighth consecutive season under head coach Brenda Frese. As excited as the Maryland Women's staff was to win this game, and reach this milestone, it was a coach on the Maryland Men's staff that they wanted us to highlight this week! Assistant coach Scott Spinelli, took over for Head Coach Mark Turgeon when Turgeon was ejected from their game vs. Miami on February 1st. Spinelli, a member of Turgeon’s staffs for six seasons, said Turgeon’s eruption was the coach’s way of sparking life into his players, who were far too timid against a more physical, hungry Miami team. Spinelli led the Terps to an exciting comeback, from down 16 points, that fell just short in a 90-86 double-overtime loss; however, Spinelli's leadership in an adverse situation showed why he is a rising star in the coaching profession. The video below shows an example of Maryland perfectly executing a play drawn up by Spinelli in a huddle, and is detalied in the FastDraw diagrams below. See More
