Basketball Play - 3 on 3 on Top (side ball screen)

3 on 3 on Top (side ball screen)

Randy Sherman 05/20/2015

3 on 3 on Top (side/wing ball screen) Offensive restriciton: pass and follow to the ball screen. There are many ways to teach defending ball screens. In this drill you can practice trapping the ball screen, ICEing the ball screen, flat hedging or hard hedging. Adapt it to your personal philosophy. For the #PressureManTips series, I will illustrate the hard hedge (some call this "blitz"). Points of emphasis: HEDGE: get hip-to-hip with the screener, widen the wide side of your body by extending outside arm and leg. Make the ball handler "bubble" their dribble, go with them 2-3 steps then recover. ON THE BALL: reach your away foot over the top foot of the screener and then run through the gap to recover to man and force back up the rooftop. HELP: Break the Line Rules and get to midline! even though the ball is at or above FTLE, get to midline. Look for anything "leaking" out of the ball screen (slip, roll or reject) Drill continues with pass and follow to ball screen action. See More

Basketball Play - 14 Again

14 Again

Kyle Gilreath 08/20/2013

Louisville ran this pick & roll play in their 2013 Final Four game versus Wichita State. Siva (1) did an excellent job head hunting X5 after flipping the ball to 2. This action happened very quickly as 2 attacked the paint X4 had to stunt at the ball and X3 sank down to cover 4. All of this action forced so much help that 2 was able to find 3 spotting up in the corner for a catch & shoot. To see EVERY play Louisville ran in the 2012 and 2013 Final Four you can do so in my eBook Championship Execution! See More

Basketball Play - Gregg Popovich San Antonio Spurs: 2-1-2 Scissor Option 2

Gregg Popovich San Antonio Spurs: 2-1-2 Scissor Option 2

Scott Peterman 03/04/2015

One of the most common three on three play in basketball is splitting the post and scissoring off the post, or first cutter and second cutter. This play uses an double staggered down screen. It involves the high post man and both guards. It's a great way to get your point guard a great shot. Gregg Popovich has built a good portion of his career wins on the efforts of veteran-laden teams, led by Hall of Famer David Robinson and future Hall of Famer Tim Duncan, playing a traditional, grind it out style of inside out basketball. It's been a style that was extremely successful, winning Popovich almost 65 percent of his regular season games (more than 53 games a season) and five NBA Championship Titles. Basketball Play - Back

Back

John Leonzo 06/10/2013

Here is a set that Butler ran often for Gordon Hayward (3 in this set) to get him an ISO opportunity on his favorite side of the court. 2 cutting hard off of the stagger screen is essential so that x3 helps, giving 5 a great opportunity and angle to flare 3 out to the wing. Misdirection feel of this play by having all of the action go to the weak side up until the point of the flare from 5 also helps make this an effective set. See More

Basketball Play - Flare 2

Flare 2

Dana Beszczynski 09/04/2013

The Louisville Cardinals do a good job using the flare screen in this set to get 2 an open look at the 3 pt shot. The set is run from a 2-3 set-up and uses good movement and screens to make the defense make decisions. Rick Pitino is excellent at designing plays to get his best players in their best spots to score. See More

Basketball Play - Zipper Twist

Zipper Twist

Kyle Gilreath 05/31/2013

There is no better way to end the week than with one last zipper action from the Indiana Pacers. They ran this play versus the Miami Heat in Game 5 of the ECF. The Pacers have had much success in pick & roll situations finding Hibbert on the role for points in the paint. This is an excellent way to set up a pick & roll for Hibbert. By placing a shooter (3) in the corner it makes helping on the roll of 5 harder because if the defense sags in a talented point guard will throw back to 3 for a shot. See More

Basketball Play - Box-Name

Box-Name

Daniel Murphy 05/10/2013

Isolate your best shooter or driver with this screen the screener action. This is an interesting play because a lot of times the stagger comes on the weak side. This time the stagger is on the strong side, leaving a side of the floor isolated for a drive. This play can be run either to the right or the left. Make sure to practice the footwork of how you want your player to turn after the catch. See More

Basketball Play - Re-Zip Thru Pop

Re-Zip Thru Pop

Adam Spinella 11/26/2013

Monty Williams runs this play for the New Orleans Pelicans to get Ryan Anderson a good three point attempt by rubbing his defender off him with a decoy action. On the wheel route run by Gordon off of Anderson, Anderson's defender is forced to sag off and let Gordon's defender thru, thus giving Anderson the perfect lane to pop back to the three point arc.
