The University of Houston runs an incredibly effective offense. This set is designed to get a mismatch and the ball in space with shooters surrounding him.
Michigan switched this defensively, which for most teams in the country a 1 to 5 or 1 to 4 ball screen would present serious mismatch problems.
If defense does not switch, there is either a layup, three, or long closeout to be had.
1 enters ball to 3 who is lifting.
*In this formation if 3 is ever denied it's an immediate pass to 5 at the elbow and a backdoor from 3 for a layup.
On 3's catch 4 clears to corner with 2 lifting.
*Spacing points: 3 must be deep corner to catch and shoot. top spacer must be free throw line extended heels to sideline.
1 UCLA cuts to keep defense honest (might be able to steal a layup).
In this clip, 1 tight curls and essentially brush screens to force a switch.
5 pops to open space preferably as high up as possible to maintain middle driving options.
But...
Release position to keep possession. Don't gamble on the catch to keep a certain position.
1 will pop and if teams do not switch could be wide open for a three as well.
All others space, read the help and are ready to attack any advantage created.
