Basketball Play - 1-2-2 Flex Offense Entry

1-2-2 Flex Offense Entry

Matt Hackenberg 12/07/2021

In this diagram and embedded video we are looking at an entry into the flex offense. This is a methodical continuity set, aimed at getting the defense to slip up on defending screens off the ball. I like all the cutting, screening and movement. I think it limits penetration opportunities to a certain extent, and makes your players a bit robotic running the pattern. But time has proven, the flex offense can be very effective, especially at the high school level. Basketball Play - Slice Stagger Continuity

Slice Stagger Continuity

Matt Hackenberg 12/07/2021

This action in the diagram and embedded video uses a hard curl on a slice screen to try to put pressure on the defense. If the screen is solid and the cut hard, it sets up a stagger screen very well. Box Set - Screen In Hammer Pair

Matt Hackenberg 12/07/2021

In this diagram and embedded video we look at two sets that work together to look similar, but produce different scoring opportunities. I will always be a sucker for a well executed hammer set. Basketball Play - Push Zip Iverson Series

Push Zip Iverson Series

Matt Hackenberg 12/07/2021

In this diagram and embedded video we look at a series of plays that all play off of each other. The series uses the same movement pattern to make it difficult for the defense to understand what is going to happen through scouting. Some of the these actions are pretty clever! Basketball Play - Princeton Chin

Princeton Chin

Matt Hackenberg 12/05/2021

This diagram and film looks at the basic Princeton Chin action. The action is a bit monotonous, but can be very effective. The action is a continuity, so you can just keep running it until you get a scoring opportunity. It's very good against pressure defense. Basketball Play - The Spread Offense

The Spread Offense

Matt Hackenberg 12/03/2021

In this diagram and embedded video, we look at the spread offense used in high school basketball. This offense uses the high post and a series of cutters to attack the defense in a variety of ways. This offensive concept has always been a unique and interesting play style to me, ever since I first saw it when Stephen F. Austin was running it under Brad Underwood in the early 2010's. The offense has evolved quite a bit, but in the video below you will see a lot of the more basic options used when it is ran at the high school level. Basketball Play - Drift Ball Screen Reject Hammer

Drift Ball Screen Reject Hammer

Matt Hackenberg 12/02/2021

In this diagram/video we look at a set play to get a three pointer. It’s a hammer action, which were always fun to me as a coach to see executed. Rejecting the side ball screen usually sucks the defense in, and allows for the weak side defender to get pinned in. The embedded video shows the set in more detail. Basketball Play - Box BS Throwback STS

Box BS Throwback STS

Matt Hackenberg 12/01/2021

It's always nice to have some sets up your sleeve to get your high level shooter a look from the outside when you need it. This set can be one of those play calls. Against teams that get through screens, it should work well as long as the shooter sets a great back screen. Against teams that switch, it's important that the last screener seal their own defender to free up the shooter. Video clip below.
