In a pivotal Game 6 of the 2017 NBA Playoffs, the Celtics were struggling offensively. Brad Stevens is excellent at designing multiple set sequences, to help his team find a rhythm. In the 2nd quarter, the Celtics ran this sequence, scoring on two of the three possessions. The only possession that they did not score was an open 3, which rimmed out. The Cavs used this play to help break open the game and extend their lead from 2 to 8. The Cleveland Cavs ran this inverted variation of the Horns set early in game 4 against the Toronto Raptors. Normally in a Horns set 5 & 4 set the ball screen up top with 2 & 3 in the corners. In this lineup the Cavs have 4 shooters spaced around LeBron James (3) so it was easy for the guards and posts to switch roles and still keep everyone spaced on the perimeter. 5 & 4 set pindown screens for 1 & 2 then cut to the corners. 3 turns the corner on the ball screen to look for a shot or any of his teammates spaced around the 3 point line. The Toronto Raptors ran this corner OOB play to get their best player a look off of a pindown screen. All 4 players start spread out near halfcourt then cut to the basket. 5 gets a screen from 1 to receive the entry pass. On the catch, 2 sets a pindown screen for 3. 5 then passes to the 3 for a shot. The Raptors weren't able to get a shot from 3 but this play forced a double team and they were able to get an open look for 5. See More

"Horns Double" is another wrinkle off of the basic "Horns Action." The set creates multiple actions, behind the ball screen. With the post player defending the ball screen, the help is eliminated on the weak side double stagger screen. If the defense recovers, the play ends with a Flare screen for the 4. This set requires the defense to have perfect switches and/or a perfect scramble rotation. As we see, throughout the history of basketball, great offense has an advantage over great defense.
