Basketball Play - Zip HO Step Up Hammer SLOB

Zip HO Step Up Hammer SLOB

Matt Hackenberg 12/16/2021

In this diagram and video clip we see a longer form SLOB to create a three-pointer off of hammer action. Sometimes I love this set, and other times, I wish it would just get to the point. I really do like flowing pattern of the set, and hammer action is one of my favorites. All of the action is set up up well using screens to make sure players are open when they need to be. Basketball Play - Box Chicago Flare SLOB

Box Chicago Flare SLOB

Matt Hackenberg 12/15/2021

In this diagram and video clip we see a SLOB with a good amount of movement from a box alignment. I like the Chicago action for the DHO, and how the ball changes from side to side to set up the flare. Basketball Play - 21 Series Transition Offense

21 Series Transition Offense

Matt Hackenberg 12/15/2021

The 21 series is usually a 3-player action that happens right out of transition. The bunch action makes the options easy to disguise, almost like play action fakes in football. There are a variety of actions that can come from this series, and they all develop quickly, making them ideal for teams that want to play with a fast tempo. Not all the diagrams are represented with clips in the video below, but this was all I could dig up on film. Basketball Play - "21" High Ball Screen Attack

"21" High Ball Screen Attack

Matt Hackenberg 12/14/2021

In this diagram and embedded video we look at a simple ball screen concept. We used this when we had two attacking guards we wanted to keep out front, allowing them to create by using a ball screen or rejecting into the gap. We wanted to keep shooters in the corners as much as possible. For as simple as the cocnept was, it was fairly effective against good competition. We started to add other options to make the offense less predictable with the zip and DHO options. Video clips below. Basketball Play - 5 Out DHO Flare

5 Out DHO Flare

Matt Hackenberg 12/14/2021

This set uses some misdirections to set up a flare screen for our shooter. We want to get the defense watching the ball while we set up a dribble at flare. With the space created by the flare, we want to shoot or attack the close out. Video clip below. Basketball Play - 5 Out DHO Stagger

5 Out DHO Stagger

Matt Hackenberg 12/14/2021

Out of our 5 Out alignment we used a set to to bring our 1 off of a double stagger screen. We reverse the ball to our 4, dribble hand off to the 2, and stagger screen on the back side. Developing slipping options out of the stagger would make this set even tougher to guard. Basketball Play - 3-Out Dribble Drive "Spread"

3-Out Dribble Drive "Spread"

Matt Hackenberg 12/12/2021

This is a very simple concept out of a 3-2 alignment. We simply pass to the wing and cut underneath of the ball. This creates a gap to drive. We want to drive the gap to score or draw the defense to kick. Basketball Play - Princeton Offense - Multi-Option Set: "Hawk"

Princeton Offense - Multi-Option Set: "Hawk"

Matt Hackenberg 12/12/2021

This is a long form play with multiple options from a Princeton alignment and a floppy action to feature a dynamic player. If the player can drive, shoot, post up, finish off the cuts or use a ball screen there are options to do so. We used the play to feature a shooter, but a post up player or a driver could also be used, just different options would need to be emphasized. Basketball Play - DHO Swing Brush Screen

DHO Swing Brush Screen

Matt Hackenberg 12/08/2021

In this diagram and embedded video we have a set play to get a dynamic driver some space to operate. The play uses some false motion to open space up for a brush screen to be used to try to create an advantage to drive to the basket. I love these gap drive actions to take some pressure off the driver, and make the defense execute with the brush screen. Basketball Play - 5 Out Triple Stagger DHO

5 Out Triple Stagger DHO

Matt Hackenberg 12/07/2021

In this diagram and embedded video we look at a set play out of a 5 Out alignment to create a driving gap. We pin down screen into a DHO to create the gap, and space a shooter in the corner to keep the defense honest. Basketball Play - Princeton Point Series

Princeton Point Series

Matt Hackenberg 12/05/2021

In this diagram + video we look at a few options to use out of the Princeton Point Series. The diagrams show the different entries, and the video shows some different options to use in a series. The options you could use are unlimited, but here is a group of actions to consider out of the series. This series can be hard to guard when executed correctly. Basketball Play - The Spread Offense

The Spread Offense

Matt Hackenberg 12/03/2021

In this diagram and embedded video, we look at the spread offense used in high school basketball. This offense uses the high post and a series of cutters to attack the defense in a variety of ways. This offensive concept has always been a unique and interesting play style to me, ever since I first saw it when Stephen F. Austin was running it under Brad Underwood in the early 2010's. The offense has evolved quite a bit, but in the video below you will see a lot of the more basic options used when it is ran at the high school level.
