Basketball Play - 5 Out Double Flare "Special"

5 Out Double Flare "Special"

Matt Hackenberg 12/14/2021

We used a 5 Out pass and cut offense which set up this play perfectly. When the designated shooter got to the top of the key we double-flared the back side and dribbled at the flare screens. We used a numbering system for our personnel - the point guard was the 1, shooting guard was the 2, etc. So I would call "Special 2" to indicate we were running the flare screens for the shooting guard in our system. 5 Out: False Go Flare

In this diagram and embedded video we look at a flare screen from a 5 Out transition. It doesn’t generate the most efficient shot, but as you can see from the video, it is EXTREMELY hard to stop. If you have point guard that can really shoot it, this action can create a ton a wide open looks. Basketball Play - The Spread Offense

The Spread Offense

Matt Hackenberg 12/03/2021

In this diagram and embedded video, we look at the spread offense used in high school basketball. This offense uses the high post and a series of cutters to attack the defense in a variety of ways. This offensive concept has always been a unique and interesting play style to me, ever since I first saw it when Stephen F. Austin was running it under Brad Underwood in the early 2010's. The offense has evolved quite a bit, but in the video below you will see a lot of the more basic options used when it is ran at the high school level. Basketball Play - Phoenix Mercury - Horns Elbow for DT

Phoenix Mercury - Horns Elbow for DT

Erica Williamson 10/15/2021

This “Elbow” Horns set has been a go-to play for the Phoenix Mercury throughout the 2021 WNBA Season. During the 2021 Finals, Mercury Head Coach Sandy Brondello has frequently gone to this Horns set with her Big Three - Skylar Diggins-Smith at the 1, Diana Taurasi at the 3, and Brittney Griner at the 5. Taurasi has proved time and time again in “Elbow” action why she was recently voted by fans as the “GOAT” and greatest player of all-time in the WNBA, consistently knocking down the big-time three in clutch moments for the Mercury.
