UCLA ran this concept-based zone offense in their First Four matchup against St. Bonaventure, putting their best player (1) on the baseline and giving him different options to cut behind the zone. When the ball gets to a side one of the post players cuts to the high post and the other one stays low. This overloads the offense, putting 4 offensive players against 3 defensive players in the zone. When the ball is reversed up top, 1 has options to run the baseline or flash to the high post. If 1 receives the ball in the high post, 4 and 5 seal their defenders looking for a pass to the rim. 2 and 3 flatten out to the wings to create a better passing angle for a kickout three point shot. The Lakers opened the second half of their Christmas day game against the Clippers with this play designed to get Lebron James (1) the ball off a pindown screen. 1 started the play by passing to 3 on the wing and making a UCLA cut to the basket. 3 immediately passed to 5 off of the ball screen, who reversed the ball to 2 on a dribble handoff. 1 then cuts off the screen from 4 to get the pass from 2. In this situation the initial actions were defended well and the Lakers went into a second ball screen and a high post flash in order to get a shot off. See More

With 5 minutes left in the 4th quarter and the game tied at 101, the Lakers ran this play designed to get Anthony Davis a dunk off the roll to the rim. 1 started the play with a pass to 3 and a cut to the opposite block off the UCLA cut. 3 then passes to 5 off the ball screen. This inital action was the same as the play the opened the second half with. This time instead of getting the handoff from 5, 2 cuts to the opposite corner. This cleared a side of the floor for 5 to dribble handoff with 1. 1 turned the corner and passed to 5 for the easy dunk. See More

The play starts with the guards curling around the posts at the elbows followed by a UCLA cut by the point guard and they 5 popping out to receive the pass from 3. 5 then reverses to 4 to setup the decoy action of 2 cutting off a screen from 1. 3 then sets the backscreen for 5 on the weakside for the lob. As 5 sets the flare screen for 2 this forces X5 to drop back in a help/support position to prevent the basket cut. As this is happening, 5 turns and sets a second screen for 3.
