Basketball Play - Push Zip Iverson Series

Push Zip Iverson Series

Matt Hackenberg 11/23/2021

This is a series of plays that all originate out of the same basic movement pattern. The movement pattern masks the outcome of the play to help against teams that are well prepared through scouting. The series of plays is designed to feature a dynamic soring point guard. The push zip iverson action helps create safe movement against teams that like to pressure. I like the series of plays because it allows for creativity from a dynamic player (the side ball screen), looks for cheap points (blind pig and backdoor), and gets a shooter a a good look for three in a crafty way. Basketball Play - Quick Hitter: Box Overload Duck

Quick Hitter: Box Overload Duck

Matt Hackenberg 11/23/2021

Any time we had a functional big man, we always have this in the playbook. The play is simple, and provides a great opportunity to isolate your big. The movement puts the defense in a tough spot because the back side help is removed, so if they front, we can throw over the top for a layup. If they play behind, we have a 1 on 1 opportunity on the block. The play gets right to the point of the set, which I like because it limits the number of ball handlers and decisions that need to be made. You can easilty hide weaker players in the 4 or the 2 spot in this play. Basketball Play - 1-2-2 Zone Offense: Stagger Slip

1-2-2 Zone Offense: Stagger Slip

Matt Hackenberg 11/24/2021

This is a zone set using a 1-2-2 alignment. I love the play because if nothing materializes, you are left with a 1-3-1 alignment that plays well against most zones. The ball is entered to the wing, and the wing uses a drag dribble down the sideline to shift the defense. The ball is returned to 1 who dribbles to the other side of the court while reading the defense. The action is a stagger screen with a slip into the middle of the defense. Our primary look is the slip to the middle, but we would take the stagger if the defense didn't cover it. Getting the slip in the middle opens up many options for the offense - shot, kick down, kick out. See More

Basketball Play - 2-Up Press Breaker

2-Up Press Breaker

Matt Hackenberg 11/30/2021

This is honestly the only press breaker I've ever used as a coach. It's so versatile, working well against whatever style of pressure if presented. We don't have to have different concepts installed for man and zone presses, or softer presses and harder presses . The press breaker is built on proper spacing, allows for safe reversals, but also has options to attack up the court against any style of press defense. We absolutely roasted diamond presses using the sideline entry of this press breaker. I like having 2-up, as we had help to get the ball inbounded if needed but it wasn't as congested as bringing 4-up or 3-up agianst presses. The video below will absolutely break down everything in the diagram to be easily understood. Basketball Play - Brush Throwback Lob (Zone Set)

Brush Throwback Lob (Zone Set)

Matt Hackenberg 11/30/2021

I always found this lob set to be creative and effective. I thought having it in the playbook was always valuable because I felt like we could steal an easy basket against zone defense, or at least get a high efficiency shot. Timing is so critical, but if the timing is perfected, this play will be hard to stop. Having your best passer in the position to throw the lob is very important, something I didn't always do a good job of when we ran this set. Basketball Play - Box BS Throwback STS

Box BS Throwback STS

Matt Hackenberg 12/01/2021

It's always nice to have some sets up your sleeve to get your high level shooter a look from the outside when you need it. This set can be one of those play calls. Against teams that get through screens, it should work well as long as the shooter sets a great back screen. Against teams that switch, it's important that the last screener seal their own defender to free up the shooter. Video clip below. Basketball Play - 32 "Strong" (Twin Post Continuity)

32 "Strong" (Twin Post Continuity)

Matt Hackenberg 12/01/2021

In this diagram we look at a continuity offense to get the ball inside. The set features multiple options to feed a single post player. The action can be ran to feature two bigs at the same time if you have the luxury of multiple interior threats. When we ran this offense, we had two bigs that could both play inside and feed each other on the high/low. All the options of the offense are explored in the embedded video. Basketball Play - Zip Pin Duck

Zip Pin Duck

Matt Hackenberg 12/01/2021

In this set we go back to the interior for a set play designed to get a scoring post a touch on the block. The set uses a little misdirection by dribble pushing the entry away from where the post up will materialize. The dribble push triggers a zipper cut, and the ball is swung to a player receiving a pin down screen to be open. The post who pins down, then seals up for the post entry. Basketball Play - Triangle Delay Concept

Triangle Delay Concept

Matt Hackenberg 12/01/2021

This diagram looks at a delay game tactic. This strategy and spacing are hard to disrupt. The concept is very simple - use a down screen out of a 2-1-2 alignment to milk the clock, looking for opportunities to attack if the defense extends too far. The embedded video below has plenty of clips to see the strategy in action. Basketball Play - Stacks Delay Concept

Stacks Delay Concept

Matt Hackenberg 12/01/2021

Our "Stacks" delay game strategy is designed to dictate the tempo of the game through offensive possessions. This strategy uses stacks at the elbows to balance the court. I like it becuase it can be used as a pure delay game, but also has enough attacking options, espeically if the defense falls asleep, to mix in throughout a game without the desire to stall. The embedded video shows the various options that take place out of the "Stacks" strategy Visit my Sellfy store for detailed coaching materials written by me - https://sellfy.com/coachhack.go/ Follow me on Twitter - @CoachHackGO See More

Basketball Play - Sideline Delay Concept

Sideline Delay Concept

Matt Hackenberg 12/01/2021

This "Sideline Delay" diagram and video is designed to control the clock and dictate the pace of the game through your offense. This particular strategy used a spread alignment with an empty sideline for a little twist on the typical 4 corners strategy. I really like the intelligent design of this action with the way the center is used, and all the space that is created for a dynamic driver. The embedded video shows the concept in detail. Basketball Play - Triangle Continuity Zone Offense

Triangle Continuity Zone Offense

Matt Hackenberg 12/02/2021

This diagram/video looks at a continuity action to run against zone defense. Every season we had a "base zone offense," meaning when we saw zone, we were automatically in that zone concept unless the play call was overridden by myself. This is a great option for a base zone offense. It has some movement, and is simple and effective. We cut a player from the back side into the middle of the zone looking for a penetrating pass into the zone. The player exiting from the middle to top tends to suck the guards out, leaving the middle more open. The embedded video shows the concept in more depth. Basketball Play - Drift Ball Screen Reject Hammer

Drift Ball Screen Reject Hammer

Matt Hackenberg 12/02/2021

In this diagram/video we look at a set play to get a three pointer. It’s a hammer action, which were always fun to me as a coach to see executed. Rejecting the side ball screen usually sucks the defense in, and allows for the weak side defender to get pinned in. The embedded video shows the set in more detail.
