Basketball Play - Boston Celtics - EOG Clear Lob SLOB

Boston Celtics - EOG Clear Lob SLOB

Matt Wheeler 05/07/2018

This play was #20 on the most downloaded plays of 2018! Check out the full list and download the playbook: The Top 25 Plays of 2018 The Boston Celtics were down 2 with 25.8 seconds left in regulation when Brad Stevens called a timeout, noticing his team was not likely to get a good shot attempt late in the shot clock. The Celtics used this play to combat the late game switching strategy that the 76ers were using and get a quick shot at the rim. 5 started the play by curling around the screen from 4 and to screen for 1. This occupied Philadelphia's defenders and forced the only help on the lob to come from x1 as he switched onto 5 on the screen. Jaylen Brown (2) then screened for 4 and cut to the rim. Because the 76ers were switching that screen, Brown was able to seal his new defender and cut to the basket to receive the lob pass for a quick finish. Basketball Play - Boston Celtics - EOG Post Seal SLOB

Boston Celtics - EOG Post Seal SLOB

Matt Wheeler 05/06/2018

This play was #14 on the most downloaded plays of 2018! Check out the full list and download the playbook: The Top 25 Plays of 2018 The Boston Celtics were down 1 with 8.4 seconds left in overtime when the got the ball stuck in the corner and they had to call a timeout to save the possession. They initially ran a play to get the ball to Jayson Tatum but had to call their final timeout when the 76ers nearly forced a five-second call on the inbounds pass. Down to their final chance, the Celtics ran this play to get Al Horford (5) isolated at the rim. The 76ers were switching all screens to keep the Celtics from getting an open look. This worked to the Celtics advantage as Horford screened for 2, bringing Joel Embid (x5) away from the basket to deny the pass to 2. x2 and x3 had already switched assignments when 3 cut along the baseline. This isolated Horford against Robert Covington (x3) in the post. Covington fronted Horford to deny the pass but with the weak side cleared, Horford sealed his defender to get the lob pass at the rim for the game-winning basket. Basketball Play - Cleveland Cavaliers - Swing Flare Slip

Cleveland Cavaliers - Swing Flare Slip

Matt Wheeler 05/22/2018

Cleveland ran this ATO play to take advantage of Boston's tactic of switching the flare screen, and got a layup for Jeff Green (4). The play started with LeBron James (3) cutting to the top to receive the pass from 1. This got the ball in the hands of their best passer. 4 sets the flare screen for 2 and slips to the basket. 5 sets a flare screen for 1 on the other side of the floor to occupy the defense. Basketball Play - Team USA - EOG Baseline Curl Pop BLOB

Team USA - EOG Baseline Curl Pop BLOB

Matt Wheeler 02/26/2019

After missing a shot to take the lead in the final seconds of its game against Argentina, the USA Men's World Cup Qualifying Team found themselves in an end-of-game BLOB situation. They were down 1 with one second left in the game. Head Coach Jeff Van Gundy called a timeout to draw up this play to take advantage of a common late-game defensive tactic of switching all screens. 2 curls around 3 to force the defensive switch. This got the smallest defender on the court switched onto 3. 3 then pops to the corner to receive the pass from 1. Now having the size advantage over x2, 3 was able to rise up and make a tough contested shot against the smaller defender. Free Playbook: Late Game Situations See More

Basketball Play - Houston Rockets - Stagger Slip SLOB

Houston Rockets - Stagger Slip SLOB

Matt Wheeler 04/29/2019

The Houston Rockets were down 5 with 24.4 seconds left in game 1 against the Golden State Warriors. They needed at least two scores to tie the game so they needed to get a quick basket and then foul to extend the game. This play worked very well against the Warriors strategy of switching all screens. James Harden (2) started the play as a decoy, setting the second screen for Eric Gordon (3). The Warriors switched off of Harden on the screen to take away an open three from Gordon. Harden then flashed to the ball to receive the pass from 5 and quickly attack the basket. Loyola Chicago Ramblers - Delay Pin DHO

Matt Wheeler 03/26/2021

This is one of the most frequent actions that Loyola Chicago will use in their offense. The consecutive screens make it a tough action to guard, no matter if the defense is fighting through the screens or switching. Watch for variations in this action including ball reversals and/or rejection of screens. FastModel's biggest offer of the year for new subscribers! Use code at checkout: MARCHMADNESS See More

Basketball Play - 4 Corner Shooting (WPD)

4 Corner Shooting (WPD)

Joel Hueser 09/06/2016

Motion offense is one of our program pillars. 4 Corner Shooting (WPD) is one of our favorite motion team shooting drills. This drill is not only a good shooting drill, but it also incorporates game-like passing and cutting fundamentals. 4 Corner Shooting (WPD) works best with 8 players and 4 basketballs. We concentrate on four different cuts, but additional cuts could easily be added. Our motion principles emphasize wide pin down screens. From this action, 4 cuts may happen based on how the defense guards the action. 1. Straight Cut – More times than not this is the cut made coming off of a wide pin down screen. There is usually just enough time to catch and shoot. We teach and emphasize the inside-pivot, but still have a few athletes who are more comfortable hopping into their shot. 2. Curl – When the defender chases the 1st cutter over the screen, it is important to curl (or as we say, tight curl) into the paint and attack the basket. 3. Flare – When the defender goes under the screen, the screener is taught to reposition his screening angle and the 1st cutter flares to the open spot. 4. Reject – Also, very aggressive teams will try to blow up your screen and beat the 1st cutter to the spot. At this point, we are teaching a back cut. Another important teaching point is that of the second cutter. We like to say, “Finish your cuts!” One example of this is for the 2nd cutter (screener) to read the 1st cutter and go opposite in direction. The drill sequence is as follows: 1) pass first 2) screen second 3) shoot third 4) rebound last 5) change lines. Our team goal is always 15 or more mfg’s for every minute. We will either go for 8 minutes or 4 minutes; depending on our time allotted. To date our best ever is 135 mfg’s in 8 minutes. Again, 120 mfg’s is a very realistic goal for high school players. Basketball Play - Decathlon Testing

Decathlon Testing

Joel Hueser 09/21/2016

Each year, preseason and sometimes during the season, we test our players for assessment purposes. The Decathlon is a good indicator of player strengths and weaknesses. The test consists of ten shooting skills performed for one minute each, one skill right after the other. We have acquired over 25 years of data using this test. As a result, we have a pretty good idea of a player's offensive skill set when it's all said and done. We like to factor these numbers into our selection process. To date, in my 25+ years of coaching, not quite 20 players have scored 200 baskets or higher. The highest is 218. The first 3 minutes set the tone. A fundamentally sound player can score close to 100 or more baskets right out of the gates. We consider the following grade levels and scores very good: Freshmen 160 or more Sophomores 170 or more Juniors 180 or more Seniors 190 or more Skill Level Scale: 000-100 | Poor! 100-115 | Very Low Skill Level 115-130 | Low Skill Level 130-145 | Average Skill Level 145-160 | Above Average Skill Level 160-175 | High Skill Level 175-190 | Very High Skill Level 190-205 | Outstanding! Basketball Play - Kill the Grass

Kill the Grass

Joel Hueser 08/08/2017

Kill the Grass has served us well over the years. We find this drill to be most beneficial when we are working with large numbers of campers and/or youth players. Players work with a partner or a group of three. Our older varsity players will also be spread throughout the gym and model the fundamental skills. They say, "It's not what you teach, but what you emphasize." KTG emphasizes the following fundamentals: passing, catching, triple threat, closing out, ball pressure, shot and foot fakes, blow-by and crossover live ball moves, dribbling, stops and pivots. Basketball Play - HoopGrind Basketball - "Elbow Chase"

HoopGrind Basketball - "Elbow Chase"

Doug Brotherton 04/07/2017

This box set incorporates our "ELBOW" action. The Elbow action starts in a box set, with guards splitting to the wings. Post lift up the lane line. What I like about this play is the versatility. It can be used to generate an open 3, a post iso, or a high/low look. It can also be used effectively against man-to-man or zone defense, by simply teaching 4 to set the cross screen on the middle of the zone. Basketball Play - Cleveland Cavs - Stagger Back

Cleveland Cavs - Stagger Back

Doug Brotherton 05/29/2017

This BLOB has resulted in multiple big shots for the Cleveland Cavs. They ran it for a Kyrie Irving three pointer, in the 2016 NBA Playoffs against Detroit. They also ran it, as an ATO, in the 2017 NBA Playoffs for a game clinching lay-up. The stack formation makes it especially difficult to guard, as the defense can not pre-switch any of the actions. Basketball Play - SLOB Plays: Shuffle Option

SLOB Plays: Shuffle Option

Doug Brotherton 06/11/2017

This set is an example of teaching multiple options, out of one SLOB set. The Houston Rockets do this better than any team in the NBA, and it allows them to adjust to whatever adjustments are made by the defense. I have designed the weak side action in this set to remain the same, regardless of the ball side action. This is to simplify the read for the player with the ball. After the shuffle cut, there are three options, which are triggered by the 4-man. The first option is to pass to the wing, and chase into a ballscreen. The second option is a dribble hand off with the wing. The final option is to pass to the wing, and cut to the block. See More

Basketball Play - Michigan Wolverines - Pop Slice Rip

Michigan Wolverines - Pop Slice Rip

Dave Nedbalek 03/27/2018

Don't be fooled but the lack of "success" of these set plays in the video clip below. The coaching staffs in post-season play are so well scouted and the teams are elite in preperation that oftentimes the desired shot is not available. Nonetheles, the analytics surrounding side changes and paint touches remains true, as they break the defense down with each action. This set presents several shot opportunities, and the spacing is so phenoenal that however the defense plays it, there will be scoring options with the advantage created. See More
