About Dave Nedbalek

Dave Nedbalek is currently a Graduate Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach at Oral Roberts University, joining the Golden Eagles in the Spring of 2020. Prior to joining ORU Coach Nedbalek spent six years at The University of Texas at Tyler during their transition from division III into division II, and the newly formed Lonestar Conference. During his time at UT Tyler, his duties included high school recruiting, video coordination, opponent scouts, and director of creative content/graphic design. During the 2016 season at UT Tyler Coach Nedbalek helped lead the Patriots to tie the second best season record in school history, and saw 5 players nominated for American Southwest Conference honors. 

Prior to joining UT Tyler’s staff, Coach Nedbalek was the Head Boys Basketball Coach and Athletic Director at King’s Academy Christian School in Tyler, Texas. During his 5 years at King’s Academy Coach Nedbalek helped lead the Knights to four straight state tournament appearances, as well as coached 12 first-team all state, 11 second-team all state, 7 honorable mention, and the overall league Co-MVP. Coach Nedbalek compiled a record of 73-27 in four seasons as Head Coach. Coach Nedbalek was also named Coach of the Year in 2011, and 2012 and was selected to coach the Texas Christian Athletic League Eastern All-Star team in 2015.

Coach Nedbalek lives in Tulsa, OK with his wife Nikki.

This is a simple exit set utilizing a 1-4 low alignment. The clip included shows the set as designed but there are several other components I like about this set as well. With Morris (ideally Adebayo would be here) sprinting up off Herro's brush screen into a simple touch and out middle ball screen there is a component of rim pressure being applied here as well. The Heat do not, but I would lift our weakside guard (Strus) to occupy the tag and place him in a long closeout. You also have the slip, or post feed after the pinscreen for the shooter coming out. I like this set and it's versatility to create a high quality look with space. See More

This is a very common action in the Maverick's playbook. This false motion must be honored with players like Doncic, Hardaway, KP and the rest of the Mavericks weapons. This stagger into a ball screen will prompt a switch and the opportunity for the Mavericks to roll their newest big man, 7'2" Moses Brown, into the paint with a guard on his back and surrounded by shooters. This is a great set that will take advantage of any ball screen coverage. It is especially effective in taking advantage of switches as you see in the video below. The quick timing of the iverson/rub cut into the middle pick and roll will distort the help to either get 5 on the initial lob, 1 an advantage in space vs. the 5, or the throwback post entry the Mavericks use here. This is a simple but efficient set that places the defense in a decision moment. There is a threatening small to big back/cross screen while the best shooter is simultaneously comming off a double stagger. The Houston Cougars use this set to give their guards double driving gaps and accentuate it with sending them to that gap off a non-traditional double drag screen. The 3 man coming from high to low in order to set this traffic screen puts x3 in a very tough situation depending on ball screen coverage. It simply looks like 3 will slice through and then he will flip his hips into a double drag screen with 4. The set ends in beautiful spacing with room to play on the catch. While Houston's initial action doesn't always result in a basket, the action shifts the defense with hard cuts, body to body screens, and threatening drives. Another action from Shaka Smart that the Longhorns utilized efficiently in the '19-20 season was this 4 flat into a twisted ball screen. This action would be used to counter teams that hard hedged or tried to show aggressively to contain the Longhorn guards. With the last minute twist to the screen it would penalize good coverage and leave runways for the Longhorn perimeter players to drive, cut, dish and repeat. One of the things that Texas does best is simplicity. They have shot creators and playmakers surrounded by great positional length, and with the addition of elite level athleticism in Greg Brown they are even more versatile. Shaka Smart's approach to offense in Austin has been predicated on spacing the floor wide, using middle and twisted ball screens with pogo stick big men who put pressure on the rim and let players go make plays. They also place a premium on off ball cuts.
