Basketball Play - Green Bay Horns Big

Green Bay Horns Big

Kevin Bruinsma 01/24/2015

Green Bay needed a score in a huge Horizon League contest down 1 against Valpo. They used pre-season POY #24 Keifer Sykes as a decoy to free up their second best player in Greg Mays. Ball was entered to Mays who received a 5 man ball screen so he could drive it hard to his right hand. With him putting so much pressure on the defense with the drive, it allowed the 5 man great rebounding position if he would have missed the shot. See More

Basketball Play - Pittsburgh Stagger

Pittsburgh Stagger

Kevin Bruinsma 01/24/2015

Tied 72-72 with under 20 seconds left to play Pittsburgh ran a stagger action that free’d up #3 Cameron Wright for a wide open mid-range jumper to win the game. #3 Wright missed the shot, but Pitt went on to defeat Horizon League member Oakland in overtime. A small part to this action that I really liked was when the 1 passed the 4 man as he navigated down to the block the 4 showed his hands to the 5 man at the elbow as if he was expecting a pass for a shot. Even if he wasn’t an option in the play his attention to detail caused his man to at least play him as a threat which created a better angle for his pin down screen for the 1 man. See More

Basketball Play - Depaul Horns Action

Depaul Horns Action

Kevin Bruinsma 01/22/2015

Trailing by 2 with 20 seconds left and facing a UIC 2-3 zone defense Depaul went to a horns action against the zone. They made it difficult for UIC’s zone to determine when to bump and when to stay defending the ball and it ultimately led to an open game winning 3. Keep in mind Depaul didn't hit the shot off the initial action, but the action broke UIC down and led to the wide open 3 pointer. See More

Basketball Play - Side Ball Screen Vs. 2-3

Side Ball Screen Vs. 2-3

Kevin Bruinsma 01/22/2015

Tied 63-63 against UMKC we turned to the side ball screen action against their match-up 2-3 zone they played for nearly 40 minutes. The key was a great screen by #4 Amiker, which eliminated the ball defender. The weakside guard of their zone had to stop our ball handler, #11 Cole in a tie game, who then kicked it to our shooter, #10 Keene on the left wing. The bottom man of the zone didn't want to leave another shooter, #1 Plummer in the corner of the floor so the top defender tried to stop ball and then recover to contest the shot. See More

Basketball Play - Elbow Pin Elevator

Elbow Pin Elevator

Kyle Gilreath 01/08/2015

This is another play Billy Donovan ran last night in their victory over South Carolina. While the emphasis of this play is to get 3 a shot via the elevator screen, there is also an inside opportunity as well. By placing Finney-Smith at the 3, this game the Gators a bigger target inside off the initial pin-down action. Furthermore, with so much attention at the FT-line area, this is also a great opportunity for 1 to ball fake and drive baseline to the rim with the only help defender being X2. See More

Basketball Play - Elbow Running Screen

Elbow Running Screen

Kevin Noon 01/04/2015

This is a good play for teams with big guards who have an advantage in post up situations. The objective of this play is to clear out a side and allow the guard to post up while still having other valuable options if that is taken away. This is a great play that can be run after time outs, if you need a quick 2 or a 3 for a good shooter. Ideally this is a play with a perimeter oriented 4 man, big guards who can post up and good 3pt shooters. Bigs set up in down screen action with guards low. 1 initiates the offense by picking a side to take the basketball. Guards will come off opposite the side the basketball is taken. Ball side big will then turn and set a back screen on other bigs man. First guard will curl to the block and 2nd guard will curl to the top looking for a 3. 4 pops and 5 ducks in looking for a post up. It forces the defense to make quick decisions and be in the right help defensive positions. Bigs line up in down screen action. 1 picks a side to take the ball. Guards come off screen opposite the basketball. 1st look: 2 posting up on the empty block 2nd look: 3 coming off screen for 3pt shot 3rd look: 1 hits 3 , 3 hits 4, 4 gets a shot 4th look: 1 hits 3, 3 hits 4, 4 hits 5 in the post. 4 is popping as soon as 3 curls to the top 5 is ducking in for a post up See More

Basketball Play - JMU

JMU

Andrew Lacey 12/31/2014

Here is a set that you can use after a time out, late game situation or early offense. The ultimate goal is to get the ball inside to your post to work 1 v 1. It takes advantage of how the defense handles the intial ballscreen and is a counter when the post defender is sliding to the mid-line to help on the potential drive by the (1). It can be used vs. Man/Zone. See More
