Basketball Play - Get Open Drill

Get Open Drill

Drew Hanlen 10/09/2014

This is a great drill to work on screening, using screens, passing and catching! Set Up: Ball handler will start with the ball at the top of the key and will be pressured by an on-ball defender, while another offensive player will start under the rim with a defender in full denial. Two all-time screeners will start just outside each second hash mark. Step 1: Offensive player under the rim will try to free themselves from their defender by using the screeners in any way that they want (curl, pop, fade, wiggle, etc), while their defender will try to deny them from receiving a pass from the ball handler. Step 2: If the offensive player frees themselves from their defender, the ball handler will complete a pass to them. After passing the ball, the original ball handler will make a basket cut to the rim, while the offensive player that received the ball will dribble the ball to the top of the key. The offensive team will try to complete eight catches in a row, while the defenders try to get a steal or force a turnover. Ball handler can be called for a five-second violation. Additional Info: If the offensive players successfully complete eight catches in a row, they will become the next screeners, the defenders will stay on defense and the screeners will move to offense. If the defenders get a steal or force a turnover, they will become the next screeners, the offensive players will move to defense and the screeners will move to offense. Basketball Play - Randolph Drill

Randolph Drill

Fabian McKenzie 08/27/2014

This is a tremendous early season conditioning drill. It is a very tough drill to do when you stress that the players get to the corners and take no shortcuts. We will do this for 1 minute on each side building up to 3-4 minutes a side. You can choose the dribble moves they use and also what type of finish you would like at the rim. Lastly, once they know the drill, when you want to run sprints, suicides, lines, etc. think of running this instead. Lots of handling, passing and finishing. See More

Never Too Late Drill

Fabian McKenzie 07/22/2014

Offensive Players line up at half court line X2 lines up whereever the coach wishes to create different angles and timing. X1 lines up at opposite free throw line Coach throws the ball to one of the offensive lines. X2 comes in to stop ball, X1 comes in as trailer to become help defense 1 for a score - 2 for a stop or Turnover Too much time on offense = TO play for 2-3 min each Could also make this a live 2 on 2 in opposite direction after score or stop See More

Basketball Play - Off the Ball 1 on 1 Drill

Off the Ball 1 on 1 Drill

Fabian McKenzie 07/04/2014

This is a good drill for players to work on getting open away from the ball. The defensive player must also work very hard to prevent 1 from making an easy catch. The passer must also work at delivering the pass on time and on target. You can play to a set score or a set number of stops. We will move spots on the floor to increase the difficulty for the offense or defense See More

Basketball Play - Game-Like Three-Man Weave

Game-Like Three-Man Weave

Drew Hanlen 04/07/2014

If you're like me, you HATE the traditional three-man weave drill because players don't take it serious, players make bad passes, players travel during the drill and players shoot uncontested lay-ups (which rarely happens in games). Here's two great variations of the three-man weave that are actually game-like and will get your players better! Basketball Play - Four-Man Break

Four-Man Break

Alan Peel 09/10/2013

This drill is designed to teach primary break by getting players to fill lanes and get the ball up the floor quickly by passing it. If you need to make sure that your players run wide, you can place cones seven feet from the sideline at half court. Basketball Play - Three-Man Weave Drills

Three-Man Weave Drills

Alan Peel 09/08/2013

I have had great success in using this drill as a way to get my players warmed up and for team-building purposes. The players must make a specified number of lay-ups before moving on to the next stage (from five passes to four passes to three passes to being done). For a lay-up to be considered to be "made", the ball must not touch the floor at any time and the lay-up must be shot with the proper hand. Make absolutely sure that your players are catching the ball with their feet in the air and coming to a jump stop. This will prevent them from developing bad habits by traveling with the ball. Basketball Play - Stagger 2/3 & Shooting Breakdown

Stagger 2/3 & Shooting Breakdown

Daniel Murphy 08/03/2013

Stagger screen for either of your best shooters. If 5 man helps too much on the screen, make sure to look inside for the slip instead of screen and space. In frame 3 you can see the spacing and how 5, 3 and 1 spread the floor. If you have more coaches you can have 3 take the shot off the curl and have a coach make two passes to 1 or add another coach and have one coach pass to 1 and another coach pass to 2. See More
