Basketball Play - Illini Box Stagger

Illini Box Stagger

Dana Beszczynski 01/10/2014

This is a Box Set run by the Illini last night in their game against Indiana. A good set that incorporates the use of the ball screen to set-up a weak side double stagger freeing up their talented shooter Rice. The play doesn't end with the shot as the ball is reversed and what looks like a SPNR action turns into an open side penetration. Groce does a great job utilizing the box in their offensive system and this is a play with multiple scoring possibilities See More

Basketball Play - 5 Quick

5 Quick

Kyle Gilreath 12/10/2013

If you are looking for some hi-lo plays for your team, spend some time watching the Bill Self's Kansas Jayhawks. He does a tremendous job putting his players into positions to create mismatches and seals and allow for simple hi-lo play. The Jayhawks ran this post-up action for Jeff Withey in the 2012 Final Four. To see EVERY play Kansas ran in the 2012 Final Four you can do so in my eBook Championship Execution! See More

Basketball Play - Billy Donovan Horns Set

Billy Donovan Horns Set

Dana Beszczynski 11/25/2013

The Florida Gators are playing shorthanded right now, but once their line-up is complete, they will be a very exciting team to watch. Head Coach Billy Donovan has a wealth of experience and the way he runs his half court sets demonstrates this. Here is "America's play", a simple Horns action with a STS action at the end setting up either post entry or a possible jump shot. From here, the Gators go right into their Ball Screen Motion which they do a great job of executing. This play was taken from the Gators game against the Wisconsin Badgers during ESPN's 24 hour marathon. See More

Basketball Play - America's Play Reverse

America's Play Reverse

Kyle Gilreath 10/23/2013

While the head coach of the New Jersey Nets, Lawrence Frank ran this sideline out of bounds play at the end of a game in a Need 3 situation. Most of us are aware of the box screen the screener (stagger) that is referred to as America's play because everyone in American runs it. Well this action is a small tweak to the play in the event the defense tries to switch the 2-3 screen, this forces X2 and X3 to trail in both situations. See More

Basketball Play - Finland Post 78

Finland Post 78

Dana Beszczynski 10/02/2013

Henrik Dettman was serving his second stint as Team Finland Head Coach and his team beat Greece, Russia and Turkey at this year's European Championship in Slovenia. Finland ran this to isolate their naturalized American Lee in the post and with a play ending backscreen, if the defense looks to double, the man is open on the weak side for a wide open lay-up See More

Sweep

Alan Peel 08/19/2013

"Sweep" is a secondary break play run by several teams including Colorado and Harvard. This play is based on the North Carolina approach to secondary break offense made popular by Dean Smith and Roy Williams. It can be run if you do not have players athletic enough to run the Carolina break for the lob dunk and can be run into any kind of a three-around-two offense. Basketball Play - Uno and Uno Counter

Uno and Uno Counter

Jacob Collins 08/02/2013

With the endless talk of Football on ESPN these days its hard to escape the pigskin, but I think there are a lot of things we can learn from Football Coaches. The use of misdirection is key in the game of football and under-utilized in the game of basketball. The first set is what our team calls "Uno" because it is a play for our 1 man. You will notice that it is a common action and either you or someone in your league probably runs this play. The second play is just a counter to the action, a misdirection play based on how the defense is playing you. See More
