Basketball Play - 3 Cone 3 Moves Drill

3 Cone 3 Moves Drill

Kyle Gilreath 07/23/2013

This is a great series of moves for your players to work on to attack the rim from halfcourt while making multiple moves around defenders. It is important that the players try to go as fast and stay as low as possible to keep the ball low. Adding a coach with a pad at the rim forces them to finish strong through contact. Each move (Frame) should be completed with a right hand and left hand finishes before moving to the next set. See More

Basketball Play - 10 in 1 Shooting Drill

10 in 1 Shooting Drill

Kyle Gilreath 09/06/2013

This is one of my favorite shooting drills of all time. It combines shooting, conditioning, and mental toughness to fight through fatigue. I got this drill from Embry-Riddle Head Coach Steve Ridder many years ago when I was a youngster attending team camp with my dad. This drill will test any player who thinks they are a great shooter and make them prove it! Goal: Good Players: 10 Great Players: 11 Elite Players: 12+ See More

Basketball Play - NBA Closeout Drill

NBA Closeout Drill

Kyle Gilreath 10/16/2013

I saw this drill last week while watching the 2013 NBA Real Training Camp. The drill in frame 1 is how the Brooklyn Nets were shown performing this drill. The variation in Frame 2 came from the LA Clippers. I typically have my players circle the wagons during any live 5-on-5 action that starts in the half-court, but this drill is a great simulation to work on closing out at various angles during scramble situations. Basketball Play - 1 on 4 Alley Drill

1 on 4 Alley Drill

Kyle Gilreath 11/22/2013

This is a great drill I got from Florida State Assistant Stan Jones at a clinic he spoke at in the Fall. Many times when you do 1-on-1 alley drills with your team the defensive player becomes not as energetic half-way through the drill. This drill takes that factor out and makes the ball-handler beat four fresh defensive players in order to score. Once 1 and X4 finish the drill continues with a X1 becoming the new offensive player and X2 becomes the first defender in line; X3 becomes the new X2, X4 becomes the new X3, and the previous offensive player is now X4. Post Figure 8 Drill

Kyle Gilreath 02/06/2014

This is a great drill that helps your post players improve on their footwork, hand-eye coordination, and finishing around the rim. Put 1 minute on the clock for this drill and have each player perform the drill 3 times. Elements to Emphasize: Staying low and wide Keeping hands up (goal post or H) Catch and score quickly See More

Basketball Play - Pick & Roll Shooting Drill

Pick & Roll Shooting Drill

Kyle Gilreath 02/12/2015

This set of pick & roll shooting drills is one of my favorites for player development. There are 189 total moves below to work on different pick & roll coverages and methods of attack at the three most popular angles. In order to keep your workouts efficient and energetic, take just one action and focus on 3-4 moves within that action from all three angles. Do not allow your players to just go through the motions, set a goal to reach during each set. Example: You MUST make 7-10 before moving to the next sequence. See More

Basketball Play - 5-Out Circle Movement Cone Drill

5-Out Circle Movement Cone Drill

Coach Czes 09/24/2012

Cones are set up with tennis balls (or similar sized ball) on top of them in the 5 spots as diagrammed. Player 1 has "the ball" and the other 4 teammates are ready to react to "dribble penetration". Player 1 starts the action by picking the ball up off of the cone and sprinting to the basket. As soon as Player 1's ball leaves the cone, the other 4 players must Circle Move, taking their ball with them. Player 1 must put the ball in the basket (layup or dunk!) before the other 4 players place their ball on the next cone. The player moving from the corner along the baseline must place the ball on the opposite short corner cone. The last player to complete their task has an exercise (jump squats, pushups, etc) 5 fills out to corner, 1 fills open spot, and 3 becomes the player with the ball. You can start the ball from any of the 5 spots, and the player with the ball gets to choose which direction to dribble penetrate. *VARIATIONS - last 2, 3, or 4, players have to do the exercise; 4 against 1 - the player with the ball has to beat the other 4, See More

Basketball Play - Circle Movement Shooting Drill

Circle Movement Shooting Drill

Coach Czes 10/02/2012

We run this for 10 minutes with half of the team on each end of the court, starting on the right side. We do 1:30 shot fake and drive, 1:30 shot fake-escape dribble jumper, and 2:00 catch and shoot. Then we switch ENDS (they are now all on the left side of court) and work back down. 2:00 catch and shoot, 1:30 shot fake-escape dribble jumper, 1:30 shot fake and drive. We stress ball fakes before the pass, jump stop finishes, great closeouts, shot fakes, and covering ground with our dribble. We choose 2 different spots to start from each day to change the spots we shoot from and the passing and driving angles, but the drill stays the same. See More

Basketball Play - Pacers Dribble Weave

Pacers Dribble Weave

Coach Czes 05/31/2013

The Pacers ran this great action just before halftime in Game 5 of the 2013 ECF versus the Miami Heat. Unfortunately, David West missed the lay-up. The play worked so well because West's defender (Bosh) lost track of him cutting baseline and the screener's defender (Anderson) did not open up to help, allowing West to seal him under the basket.
