Favorite Send to FastDrawBelmont runs good action out of their transition attacking. Typically using a Drag screen to free up the PG. In this set, the PG looks to come off a Drag screen and kick to the wing. On the kick both 4 & 5 set a Double HI Ballscreen and look to slip it and 1/3 space on the wing in corner. Because Belmont has almost all shooter on the floor, it results in a lot of space to attack from. See More
Favorite Send to FastDrawPurdue runs a nice BLOB vs 2-3 zone. The initial action is not what gets a layup, its the combination of all 5 players moving at the same time. The keys to this set is 3 slipping into the middle of the zone after inbounding the ball and at the same time 5 slips his screen to look for the ball, with two wing players distracting the wing defenders, this action forces the zone to guard either the wings who can shoot it or the bigs inside. Favorite Send to FastDrawIncreasingly at the collegiate and even high school levels, teams are running ball screen sets. As the postseason nears and high level teams remain, offenses must be prepared for all different styles of defensive play. Some nuanced defensive teams will throw a counter to good ball screen offenses – known as icing. Icing a ball screen occurs on side ball screens, where the man guarding the ball squares his shoulders to the sideline and does not let the ball go middle. The man guarding the screener does not hedge the screen, instead being ready to contain the ball as it gets driven towards the baseline. He contains, the original defender recovers and the man guarding the screener is in position to take away any rolls to the rim. The most obvious counter to icing a ball screen is hitting the pick-and-pop game, since coverage on the screener is non-existent at the moment the ball gets driven baseline. After that, teams adjust to set alley screens which lead the ball handler to the baseline. However, coaches of ball screen-heavy offenses may consider putting in a counter during the postseason. This play is one run by many NBA teams to stop a team from icing their ball screen. See More
Favorite Send to FastDrawYesterday I shared Part 1 of Ballscreen Shooting which incorporated three different types of screening actions. The technique the throw-behind in Frame 1, is essentially a quick evade dribble. You are trying to throw the ball out in front of you, in an effort to create separation from the hedging defender, while also making it difficult for the initial defender to recover in time before the quick release jumper. Do not allow your players to just go through the motions, set a goal to reach during each set. Example: You MUST go 7-for-10 before moving to the next sequence. See More
Favorite Send to FastDrawThis set of pick & roll shooting drills is one of my favorites for player development. There are 189 total moves below to work on different pick & roll coverages and methods of attack at the three most popular angles. In order to keep your workouts efficient and energetic, take just one action and focus on 3-4 moves within that action from all three angles. Do not allow your players to just go through the motions, set a goal to reach during each set. Example: You MUST make 7-10 before moving to the next sequence. See More
Favorite Send to FastDrawThis is a drill that stresses "Turnovers to Touchdowns" It gets players to react to turnovers at mid court and to turn them into easy points. Players must pass ahead sooner and dribble less in order for a team mate to get a clean lay-up. See More
Favorite Send to FastDrawWhen playing Cleveland State you have to find ways to counter their pressue and make it as difficult as possible for them to successfully trap you. They trap all ball screens so running a horns set is one of the most difficult ways for them to do that successfully. Trailing at the half at our place we started the second half running three different variations of horns on our first three possessions. We scored on all 3. With them trapping the ball screen it makes it crucial the opposite post defender sinks in the hole or there is a strong blitz from the corner/wing defender. You can see in the first clip how even though our PG #11 DJ Cole got trapped as soon as he got the ball to our 4 man #4 Shawn Amiker he had a clear driving lane to the basket. The second clip shows us going off the 4 man, their 5 didn't sink far enough and we got an And 1. The third & final clip shows a pass entry that brought us to a back screen and down screen action on the side of the floor. With them pressuring the ball our 5 man #20 Bobby Hain created space off the bounce and hit the slipping 4 man for a lay-up. See More
Favorite Send to FastDrawCoaches have a ball X1 and X2 step in to block and begin to stutter step Defensive players must closeout when coach slaps the ball Coaches pass to players on perimeter. 1 and 2 must be prepared to shoot 3 immediately. X1 and X2 must turn and sprint to challenge the 3 point shots. Offense gets a point for getting 3 point shot off and bonus point for a make Defense gets a point for stopping shot. Change defense to offense after a set number of shots or time. Variation: you could have defense have to guard 1 dribble before coach passes the ball. See More
Favorite Send to FastDrawThis is a great quick hitter that puts a 2-3 zone in a few tough situations. This play works best if 4 is a threat to shoot the 3 at the top of the key. Once 1 initiates the play and swings the ball, quick ball movement and spacing put x4 in a spot where they have to figure out to whom they want to give the wide open 3. See More
