Basketball Play - Ball Screen Sets - Iverson STS Flare

Ball Screen Sets - Iverson STS Flare

Doug Brotherton 05/04/2017

"Iverson STS Flare" is one of my favorite ball screen sets, due to the multiple actions that occur around the ball screen. The Iverson Cut initiates the set, which is followed by a screen-the-ballscreener action. To really challenge the defense, there is a weak side flare screen, and a back screen for the ball screener. If read properly, this set is incredibly hard to defend. See More

Basketball Play - Ball Screen Sets - Horns Double

Ball Screen Sets - Horns Double

Doug Brotherton 05/04/2017

"Horns Double" is another wrinkle off of the basic "Horns Action." The set creates multiple actions, behind the ball screen. With the post player defending the ball screen, the help is eliminated on the weak side double stagger screen. If the defense recovers, the play ends with a Flare screen for the 4. This set requires the defense to have perfect switches and/or a perfect scramble rotation. As we see, throughout the history of basketball, great offense has an advantage over great defense. This set creates those advantages. See More

Basketball Play - Ball Screen Sets - Stack 52

Ball Screen Sets - Stack 52

Doug Brotherton 04/29/2017

"Stack 52" is a counter to the "Stack 25," which challenges a defense in a high pick and roll situation. Instead of rolling after the high ball screen, the 5 goes into a pin down for the 2. The point guard can look to turn the corner, or read the secondary action. This is another great option in a late clock situation. See More

Basketball Play - Ball Screen Sets - 1-up

Ball Screen Sets - 1-up

Doug Brotherton 04/29/2017

"1-Up" is a simply set, which is dependent on the ability of the PG to read the help defense. 5 sets a step up, high ball screen, and rolls back to the rim. 4 completes the roll/rise action, by rising behind the roller. 1 can turn the corner to attack, if help comes from the corner, then it is a drive and kick 3. The other read is the defender of the opposite post player. If X4 helps on the roll, then the 4 will be open on the rise. If X4 stays with the rise, then the roll should be open at the rim. This is a good late shot clock call, for those that play with a shot clock. See More

Basketball Play - Los Angeles Clippers - ATO Decoy Hammer Comeback

Los Angeles Clippers - ATO Decoy Hammer Comeback

Ryan Nguyen 04/26/2017

With the LA Clippers trailing 88-83 with 1:14 in the 4th quarter, they ran this ATO/EOG SLOB "Decoy Hammer" action against the Utah Jazz in Game 5. 2 (JJ Redick) sets a flare screen for 3 (Austin Rivers). This is decoy action as the defense has to make a decision whether to switch or not. In this case, the Jazz decide not to switch and this slight indecisveness (they switched on the 1/3 fake ball-screen action which might have caused some confusion) gave Redick space to run into a shot off of the comeback screen for 5. Basketball Play - Atlanta Hawks - UCLA High Low Lob

Atlanta Hawks - UCLA High Low Lob

Matt Wheeler 04/26/2017

The Atlanta Hawks ran this play to get a great look for a lob after a time out in their playoff game against the Washington Wizards.. A common action in this set is 2 coming of the stagger screen for a shot. In this play the Hawks used that action as a decoy and then 3 slipped the screen to the short corner. This cleared the help defense and put their 5 in a one on one position in the post. 5 then fakes the duck in and spins off of his man to catch the lob pass for the dunk. See More

Basketball Play - "TAKE" Concept

"TAKE" Concept

Randy Sherman 04/24/2017

The TAKE Concept is common in International basketball. In essesence the player passing to the big man (1 as shown) is "giving to get." He/she is passing then using acceleration to "take" the ball back from 5. The acceleration can lead to a small advantage. 5 may make one dribble, but often they step to the catch and simply "plate" the ball by holding it out to side with palm up. 1 and 5 read whether X1 trails or goes under as the ball is being taken. If the defense goes under and there is no small advantage for 1, 5 twists into a ball screen. As shown this serves as a bit of false motion into Spread Ball Screen offense. See More

Basketball Play - Milwaukee Bucks - Handoff Rip Lob

Milwaukee Bucks - Handoff Rip Lob

Matt Wheeler 04/23/2017

The Milwaukee Bucks opened game 4 against the Toronto Raptors with this play designed to get a lob dunk to 5 and help get the home crowd going to start the game. 1 follows the entry pass to 5 get the ball back on a handoff. 2 then sets the back screen on 5 putting the defense at a size disadvantage at the rim and forcing x2 to try to protect on the lob. Basketball Play - Boston Celtics - DHO Reverse Lob

Boston Celtics - DHO Reverse Lob

Matt Wheeler 04/16/2017

The Boston Celtics ran this ATO in their playoff opener against the Chicago Bulls to get an easy basket at the rim. The dribble handoff and ball reversal actions are used to clear a side of the floor for the lob and get the defense to focus on stopping 1. In order to take the lob away x1 needs to drop and protect the rim, but he would run the risk of 1 getting open for a shot. The Celtics run a similiar action to this play where 1 is the primary option and will get the ball back on a handoff from 4. In this play x1 is focused on stopping 1 and doesn't provide help on the back screen. This gets 3 a wide open look on the lob. See More

Basketball Play - Spurs Weave

Spurs Weave

Adam Spinella 04/16/2017

Gregg Popovich dribble weave set. While it can change based on personnel and spots, the objective is to get an action similar to their Motion Weak offense out of a dribble handoff set. They push one player backdoor and raise another, hoping their defenders run into each other. There is also an easy counter to cut backdoor if the defense snuffs it out and denies the pass. See More

Basketball Play - Cleveland Cavs - PNR Pindown Lob

Cleveland Cavs - PNR Pindown Lob

Matt Wheeler 04/15/2017

The Cleveland Cavs ran this play late in the 1st quarter of their playoff opener against the Indiana Pacers. On the previous possession Cleveland ran the same action except 5 followed 4 for a stagger screen for 3. This time 5 rolled to the basket for the lob catching the defense off guard. x4 and x3 were focused on guarding the pindown action for a shooter (3). x2 can't provide help because he has to guard against the corner 3. When x5 had to help on the ball screen 5 cut to the rim and was wide open for the lob. See More

Basketball Play - OKC Thunder - EOG SLOB Stagger Down

OKC Thunder - EOG SLOB Stagger Down

Ryan Nguyen 04/09/2017

With 29.8 seconds remaining in the 4th quarter and the OKC Thunder trailing the Denver Nuggets by 4 points, Billy Donovan ran this ATO action for Russell Westbrook to get a drive. The initial action by Victor Oladipo curling off of the stagger screen is decoy action to create movement. Steven Adams follows and sets a second screen for Westbrook. Adams diving to the basket after the screen puts pressure on the defense for a potential lob. See More
