Basketball Play - Chris Mooney Richmond Spiders Inbounds Slip Play

Chris Mooney Richmond Spiders Inbounds Slip Play

Scott Peterman 03/04/2015

Chris Mooney and his Richmond Spiders have been very successful on their inbounds plays this year. They beat #22 VCU Rams last wednesday. They used this inbounds play to force a second overtime. Coach Mooney thought that it was important for his inbounds an waited a split second for T.J. (receiver) to get free on the other side of the basket and didn't throw it to him as soon as he slipped free. Coach Shaka Smart remarked that he would love to have that play back again. Increasingly at the collegiate and even high school levels, teams are running ball screen sets. As the postseason nears and high level teams remain, offenses must be prepared for all different styles of defensive play. Some nuanced defensive teams will throw a counter to good ball screen offenses – known as icing. Icing a ball screen occurs on side ball screens, where the man guarding the ball squares his shoulders to the sideline and does not let the ball go middle. The man guarding the screener does not hedge the screen, instead being ready to contain the ball as it gets driven towards the baseline. He contains, the original defender recovers and the man guarding the screener is in position to take away any rolls to the rim. The most obvious counter to icing a ball screen is hitting the pick-and-pop game, since coverage on the screener is non-existent at the moment the ball gets driven baseline. After that, teams adjust to set alley screens which lead the ball handler to the baseline. However, coaches of ball screen-heavy offenses may consider putting in a counter during the postseason. If your side ball screen set usually happens with a filled corner on the side of the screen, this play is a good way to put the pressure on the defense to decide how much they value defending your shooters. Basketball Play - Slip

Slip

Kyle Gilreath 12/23/2014

UCONN's Geno Auriemma demonstrated this play this Summer at Coaching U Live in Las Vegas. This is a simple action that you get the floor moving early in the offense and keeping both bigs involved and creating hard to guard situations. As 3 comes off the pick, if X5 engages the ball and helps, a throwback to 5 may lead to a quick feed to 4. However, if 5 quickly shows and starts to get back, that is opportunity for 4 to come out and flare 5...4 has another opportunity to slip after setting the flare. See More

Basketball Play - 08 Nets Sts Slip Lob

08 Nets Sts Slip Lob

Adam Spinella 08/20/2013

After Carter buried the Raptors and sent the game to OT, he got another chance to win it in the extra frame. Lawrence Frank drew up another lob play for him, once again banking on the defense paying attention to players other than Carter. The misdirection lob play is a staple in SLOB situations, and Carter does a great job selling the screen to set it up. See More

Basketball Play - Miami Sprint Slip Stagger

Miami Sprint Slip Stagger

Kevin Bruinsma 07/21/2013

Another set started by a sprint screen from the Miami Heat as 1 sprints off 4's screen to set a ball screen on #6 Lebron James who is playing the 5 at this time. The 1 slips it and pops to the wing as #34 Ray Allen sprints off a stagger screen. #3 Dwayne Wade after setting the first screen opens right back up to the ball looking for a lob or pass. He gets a basket out of this in the NBA Finals. See More

Basketball Play - Utah Handoff Curl-Slip

Utah Handoff Curl-Slip

Adam Spinella 07/19/2013

This Sideline out of Bounds play was run by the Utah Jazz under the leadership of Jerry Sloan. Sloan used a handoff/ downscreen curl simultaneously to get the ball into a cutting big man, who would usually get to the free throw line as a result of this play. There are many options for a layup or a shot in a very brief amount of action; all around one of the better side-out plays I've seen. See More

Basketball Play - Flare Slip

Flare Slip

Adam Spinella 07/17/2013

The San Antonio Spurs ran this play against the Minnesota Timberwolves three years ago in an end game situation. It was a simple yet effective play to get a layup, which worked because the defense had to respect Manu Ginobili coming off a flare screen. See More
