Basketball Play - Corner STS Stagger

Corner STS Stagger

Matt Hackenberg 01/24/2022

In this diagram and embedded video we look at a set play out of a funky alignment. I like this set a lot. I don't exactly know why, and it seems like a lot of the other screen the screener actions I've seen but I like this one. The initial down screens should help the set run more fluidly against pressure defense. Basketball Play - Horns Elbow Stagger Handoff

Horns Elbow Stagger Handoff

Matt Hackenberg 01/24/2022

In this diagram and embedded video we look at a set play out of the horns alignment. This action is simple and effective. It's hard for the defense to chase for that long through three screens. This set naturally leads into a two-person game if the shooter is not open off the hand off. Basketball Play - Slice Stagger STS (1-3-1)

Slice Stagger STS (1-3-1)

Matt Hackenberg 01/24/2022

In this diagram and embedded video we look at a set play out of a 1-3-1 alignment. Some preliminary action sets up the screen the screener. The slice screen at the elbow is the first read, and hopefully draws some help defense, before the shooter comes off the stagger for a three-point look. Basketball Play - Ball Screen Reject Screen In

Ball Screen Reject Screen In

Matt Hackenberg 01/19/2022

In this diagram and embedded video we look at a set play out of a princeton alignment. I think this set is good to generate a open look for a shooter a couple times a game. The more the set is used, the less likely it is to trick the defense. Basketball Play - The Post Pit Drill

The Post Pit Drill

Matt Hackenberg 01/13/2022

In this diagram and embedded video we look at a post play drill. This drill really works on sealing for position inside before catching the ball, and then provides some repetitions finishing inside against live defense. The drill can become a nice conditioning drill if a player is to get stuck in the pit for a while. Basketball Play - Zone Entry - Pinch & Pinch Opposite

Zone Entry - Pinch & Pinch Opposite

Brian Shea 01/11/2022

We use "PINCH" as an entry against any zone look. (2-3/ 1-2-2 /3-2). The play is the run the same way, on either side. Forwards will screen in hard on the top players in the zone defense. As this happens, both shooters come out of the corner and the PG chooses a side. With the top defender in the zone screened in, the pass to the wing should force the bottom forward to come out to play the pass or the guard will have an open look at the basket. In REGULAR PINCH, as soon as the ball hits a wing, the strong side forward will dive to the basket down the laneline. The weakside forward will flash behind to the elbow. In PINCH OPPOSITE, as soon as the ball hits a wing, the opposite forward will dive to the strongside short corner , the strong side forward will stay in the middle. See More

Basketball Play - Central Arkansas - Circle Motion: Corner Backdoor

Central Arkansas - Circle Motion: Corner Backdoor

Matt Hackenberg 01/05/2022

In this diagram and embedded video we look at a set play out of the Circle Motion Offense. This set play comes from Central Arkansas, and has a misdirection backdoor option. I like this action sprinkled in here and there to catch the defense off guard. The more often you try to run this set, the less often it will work successfully. Basketball Play - Iverson Elbow Hit Hard Curl

Iverson Elbow Hit Hard Curl

Matt Hackenberg 12/31/2021

In this diagram and video clip we see a set play to try to score a cheap layup. Timing is critical in this action, as the elbow passer needs to be able to throw the pass if the hard curl is open. This is a tough action to defend with the defense chasing over the top on the Iverson cut. Basketball Play - Zone Set: Step Up Overload

Zone Set: Step Up Overload

Matt Hackenberg 12/28/2021

In this diagram and video clip we see a set to attack a zone. This set overloads the zone and makes the defense choose who they are going to cover. This set tries to make the defense "guard air" so that someone on offense is open because the defense doesn't shift to cover out of their zone. The point guard needs to be a great decision maker and read the defense properly to see who the open player will be. Video below. Basketball Play - Horns: Push Slice STS

Horns: Push Slice STS

Matt Hackenberg 12/25/2021

In this diagram and video clip we see a set out of a horns alignment. The set wants the defense to help on the screen in the paint, so that they are late getting through the screen-the-screener action. Against switching defenses, 5 wants to screen their own defender to free up the shooter. Video below. Basketball Play - Zone Set: Overload Flash

Zone Set: Overload Flash

Matt Hackenberg 12/25/2021

In this diagram and video clip we see a zone set to overload the defense. The object is to have four offensive players in the area of three defensive players, and force the defense to "guard air." Cleveland Cavaliers - Triangle Twist BLOB

Tony Miller 12/22/2021

Watch the video below as Coach Tony Miller uses FastDraw, the #1 play diagramming program for basketball coaches, to break down this BLOB design from the Cleveland Cavaliers and coach J.B. Bickerstaff. This STS action seems like it would be for 2, but is actually for 4. Yet if the defense drifts to 4, 2 will be wide open for a layup. Send to FastDraw using the button above. Basketball Play - Zone Set: Swing Flare

Zone Set: Swing Flare

Matt Hackenberg 12/22/2021

In this diagram and embedded video we look at a zone offense set play. I like how the play stretches the defense side to side, and overloads the defense. This is a low risk set that can produce a three-point shot. Video below. Basketball Play - Flare Gate Slip SLOB

Flare Gate Slip SLOB

Matt Hackenberg 12/17/2021

In this diagram and video clip we see a SLOB to look to steal a basket with a slip set. Having the most lethal scoring option coming off the gate screen increases the chances the defense will overreact to it. I don't think it matters which of the two screeners slip, as long as both don't slip. They want to be watching their defenders, and if either one gets above the level of the screen, slip into the open space.
