Basketball Play - Blind Pig Backdoor SLOB

Blind Pig Backdoor SLOB

Matt Hackenberg 12/16/2021

In this diagram and video clip we see a SLOB to burn aggressive defense on a blind pig backdoor. This play is sexy when executed properly, but it is better mixed in with other options out of the same set up, instead of being a stand alone set play in your playbook. Video below. Basketball Play - Curl Lob SLOB

Curl Lob SLOB

Matt Hackenberg 12/15/2021

In this diagram and video clip we see a SLOB set to try to steak a quick bucket. With a solid screen by 1 against a defense that gets through screens, this can work. I like that 1 is the player setting the back screen, loosening up the defense so that they can go catch the ball if the lob isn't there. The lob pass is critical, so you want a trusted passer to making the decision to throw the lob or not. Video clip below. Basketball Play - 5 Out DHO Flare

5 Out DHO Flare

Matt Hackenberg 12/14/2021

This set uses some misdirections to set up a flare screen for our shooter. We want to get the defense watching the ball while we set up a dribble at flare. With the space created by the flare, we want to shoot or attack the close out. Video clip below. Basketball Play - Zone Offense: Baseline Overload - "Kentucky"

Zone Offense: Baseline Overload - "Kentucky"

Matt Hackenberg 12/14/2021

We used this set to overload the baseline against a 3-2 or 2-3 zones. Our objective is to get the ball to the middle, but sometimes the corner three is there if the defense doesn't shift correctly. The timing of 5's seal is key to getting the curl into the middle. Once the ball goes to the middle, there are great opportunities to score or skip the ball. See video clip below. Basketball Play - 2-1-2 "Corners" Zone Offense (vs Odd Front)

2-1-2 "Corners" Zone Offense (vs Odd Front)

Matt Hackenberg 12/12/2021

"Corners" is our base zone offense against 1-3-1 zone, 3-2 zone, and any type of extended half court or 3/4 court. It provides great spacing to play against any form of trapping defense with the 2-1-2 alignment. Fake passes are critical, as well as not throwing passes with a lot of loft on them. Once in the scoring area, we look to dive our high post and flash to the middle when the ball gets to the corner. Basketball Play - 3-Out Dribble Drive "Spread"

3-Out Dribble Drive "Spread"

Matt Hackenberg 12/12/2021

This is a very simple concept out of a 3-2 alignment. We simply pass to the wing and cut underneath of the ball. This creates a gap to drive. We want to drive the gap to score or draw the defense to kick. Basketball Play - Horns Set Play: "Circle"

Horns Set Play: "Circle"

Matt Hackenberg 12/12/2021

This is a set play out of a horns alignment we use with multiple options. First, we use the alignment to let a playmaker attack and read the defense with the horns ball screen, roll/pop action. We want to play off the ball handler, and if we can't create a shot off the initial attack, look to play 4 around 1 with our big to get it inside. Then we look at a couple simple set options that play off of the base action. Video clip below. 5 Out Screen Away Motion Offense

Matt Hackenberg 12/11/2021

In this diagram and embedded video we look at an empty post 5 Out Motion Offense. The concept is simple - pass and screen away. We look at the options that evolve from reading the defense and making complimentary cuts to attack the defense. The diagram desriptions and video show you everything you need to know. Basketball Play - "FIRE" Transition (on a Miss/TO)

"FIRE" Transition (on a Miss/TO)

Matt Hackenberg 12/11/2021

Our semi-structured break off opponent misses has become one of the calling cards of our program. Through drilling, we've trained the players to rebound, pivot their shoulders up the court and make outlet passes leading to advantage situations for our team. As an undersized team, we view this as a defense against teams crashing the offensive boards hard. Basketball Play - 5 Out "Backdoor" Dribble Drive

5 Out "Backdoor" Dribble Drive

Matt Hackenberg 12/10/2021

We modify our dribble drive attack from 4 Out to 5 Out and use passing and cutting to create double gaps to drive. This action works best against pressure man defense and allows for tempo control by the offense. I love the offense from a developmental standpoint, teaching cutting, catching, passing and pivoting. Basketball Play - Euro Ball Screen (2-3 Zone Quick Hitter)

Euro Ball Screen (2-3 Zone Quick Hitter)

Matt Hackenberg 12/10/2021

Skip to 6:30 mark of the embedded video below. The diagrams and video show how using the Euro Ball Screen Offense against 1-3 zone functions. We ran this as a set every year we had the Euro Ball Screen Offense installed and it worked very well 2-3 times per game against zone. After that, the defense tended to figure it out. Basketball Play - Zone Motion

Zone Motion

Matt Hackenberg 12/09/2021

Our base zone offense was a 4-Out alignment with our 5 player on the baseline behind the zone. The guards were to pass and cut to heart of the defense, and then take a step back towards the ball. If they don't get the ball, they are to vacate to the open side. We wanted movement on the perimeter with a constant revolving middle player, and penetration into the gaps. Basketball Play - Euro Ball Screen into Low Cross Screen (Set Play)

Euro Ball Screen into Low Cross Screen (Set Play)

Matt Hackenberg 12/09/2021

Here we look at a set play that evolves directly from the Euro Ball Screen Offense, designed to get a forward cutting to the basket for an interior touch. I love set plays that originate out of a team's main offense, effectively masking the action to make it harder for the defense to prepare for. Euro Ball Screen into Floppy (Set Play)

Matt Hackenberg 12/09/2021

In this diagram and embedded video we look at a set play that evolves directly from the Euro Ball Screen Offense, designed to get a shooter a look coming off screening action. I love masking actions out of your base man offense. It really throws defenses off the scent of the action, and makes it harder for opponents to gain an advantage through scouting.
