Basketball Play - Team USA - Swing DHO Floppy vs Zone

Team USA - Swing DHO Floppy vs Zone

Matt Wheeler 09/09/2019

Team USA basketball faced a zone defense for much of their game against Turkey in the FIBA World Cup. They were down 1 late in overtime and ran this play to get a shot for Joe Harris (3) off of some movement. This is a common play that Gregg Popovich uses with the Spurs against man defense. They made some adjustments to run this as an effective play against Turkey's 2-3 zone defense. 1 reversed the ball to 5. Then 5 went into a dribble handoff with 2. but didn't need to set a good screen on x2. This allowed x2 to get through the screen and shift out of the wing area to matchup with 2 up top. 5 then screened x4 on the outside of the zone to get 3 open. This essentially forced Turkey to matchup man to man with x4 having to guard 3. x4 trailed on the screen and 3 was able to turn the corner on the catch and drive to the basket. See More

Basketball Play - Toronto Raptors - Zipper Loop

Toronto Raptors - Zipper Loop

Cooper Smither 04/10/2019

During a mid-season slump for Kyle Lowry, Nick Nurse introduced this San Antonio Spurs classic into the Raptors playbook. The former Tony Parker pet play involves sending a guard around a series of baseline screens to carry their momentum into an advantage on the catch. During the 2018-19 season, Toronto opened up a couple of games looking to get Lowry going and did so by running this play. See More

Basketball Play - Toronto Raptors - Motion Weak + DHO Counter

Toronto Raptors - Motion Weak + DHO Counter

Cooper Smither 04/10/2019

This play, a staple of the San Antonio Spurs offense for years, has become a pet-play of Nick Nurse’s to start the game or half. Put into the Raptors playbook in the middle of the season, this play is used for Kawhi Leonard, Pascal Siakam, and Marc Gasol to get a post touch. The first option is for a post-up to score, but the second option/counter involves a kickout pass to leverage aggressive off-ball defense against itself. See More

Slovenia - Weak DHO Spain PNR

Diccon Lloyd-Smeath 08/11/2018

Slovenia Coach Radovan Trifunovic runs this Spain PNR action out of a similar set to Spurs Motion Weak. The play is based around the PG giving the ball up then getting it back after a reversal and a down screen, then running straight from DHo with 4 into Spain PNR. Pinar Karsiyaka - Motion Weak Cross

Diccon Lloyd-Smeath 04/23/2018

Cross Screen option out of Pinar Karsiyaka Head Coach Aleksandar Trifununovic's iteration of Spurs "Motion Weak". Karsiyaka run this to get DJ Kennedy in the post but it can be used with a big. Karsiyaka will mask this entry by having the 5 start on the FT line and set back sreens before flashing for the reversal. Play can also end with an empty corner PNR instead of a post up. See More

Basketball Play - Golden State Warriors - Loop Stagger Split

Golden State Warriors - Loop Stagger Split

Matt Wheeler 06/05/2017

The Golden State Warriors ran this play to start the 4th quarter in Game 2 of the NBA Finals. It is a variation of the "Loop" play that they run, which Steve Kerr brought over from his time with the San Antonio Spurs. Normally 3 would curl around 5 to receive the pass up top from 1. In this play 3 curls around 5 to the FT line and 1 passes to 5 in the post. 3 & 1 then set a staggered screen for 2. 2 curls around 3's screen and cuts to the basket to receive the pass from 5. Basketball Play - Cleveland Cavs - Zipper Pin DHO

Cleveland Cavs - Zipper Pin DHO

Doug Brotherton 03/28/2017

In a game against the San Antonio Spurs, the Cleveland Cavaliers ran this box set. It resulted in a layup for Kyrie Irving. It was one of the few things that went well for the Cavs on this night, as the Spurs cruised to an easy victory. This set allows Kyrie to get down hill, but what makes the set so effective is the positioning of the Cavs personnel. Don't be surprised to see this, in a key moment, in this year's NBA playoffs. Basketball Play - Toronto Raptors - Weak Rub

Toronto Raptors - Weak Rub

Ryan Nguyen 03/12/2017

This is a wrinkle out of "Motion Weak" made popular by the San Antonio Spurs that the Toronto Raptors run. Instead of the ball-handler receiving the ball back on the opposite after the ball reversal like in "Motion Weak," the weak-side wing receives the ball on the wing to initiate the offense. See More

Basketball Play - Horns Get

Horns Get

Randy Sherman 02/06/2017

France commonly uses the ball screen as the initial action in their Horns alignments, but it is the second ball screen that is the real catalyst. In “Horns Get” the point guard, French superstar Tony Parker of the San Antonio Spurs, dribbles off the first ball screen and drags his man to the wing. The screener cuts away wide to the sideline to space as the other lifted big comes over to “get” Parker open with a ball screen on the wing. Parker then has a double gap (shaded area, Frame 3) to attack coming out of the ball screen. The screener rolls to the rim and the wing in the corner runs “back action” to counter his man tagging the roll man. See More

Basketball Play - Golden State Warriors - Reverse Wedge PNR

Golden State Warriors - Reverse Wedge PNR

Matt Wheeler 10/26/2016

The Golden State Warriors ran this during the second quarter of their season opening game against the San Antonio Spurs. They used a variation of the wedge play where a guard sets a high screen for a post player who then cuts into a ball screen or post up. In this version the Warriors used false action of the ball reversal and dribble handoff before getting into the wedge ball screen action. They also added a flare screen up top for a secondary option in this play. See More
