About This Play/Drill

A way to get more double screens and flare screens into a flex-style continuity offense. Passes trigger actions by following these rules:

  • Rule: Any pass from high elbow to wing triggers a double screen away!
  • Rule: Any pass from wing to high elbow triggers a weakside flare screen!
  • Rule: Any high elbow to high elbow pass triggers the flex & flare action!

ANYTIME you set a backscreen for a flex cutter, you immediately arc wide and flare screen for the high elbow

  • Begin in 4-out alignment with ballside triangle

Offense can begin with a pass to the wing (shown) or the high elbow to high elbow pass

Rule: Any pass from high elbow to wing triggers a double screen away!

    4&1 screen away for 2

    2 fills ballside high elbow

    1 fills weakside high elbow

    4 fills wing

  • Rule: Any pass from wing to high elbow triggers a weakside flare screen!

On the flight of the pass from 3 to 2, 4 sprints into flare screen for 1

    1 cuts off flare screen

2 has option of passing to 1 off the flare (which would trigger a double away) or 4 filling the high elbow

  • Rule: Any high elbow to high elbow pass triggers the flex&flare action!

2 passes to 4 triggering the flex cut from 3 and 5 steps out to screen for 3

  •

5 then immediately arcs wide and flare screens for 2 (Rule: Anytime you back screen for a flex cutter, you immediately arc wide and flare screen for the high elbow)

  • OPTION A:

4 has the option of passing to 3 on the flex cut or fully reversing to 1 (shown)

If 4 reverses to 1 that triggers a double away: 5 rescreens for 2 and 4 doubles away

4 would then fill weakside high elbow, 5 would fill the weakside wing

  • OPTION B:

4 passes to 5 at high elbow

That triggers the flex & flare action.

1 makes flex cut of 3's backscreen

3 immediately arcs and flares for 4

Now you have basic continuity as 5 can fully (triggering a double away) or pass back to high elbow (triggering a flex & flare action)
