Tuesday night in their nail biting loss to South Florida, Florida Gulf Coast ran this half-court set for a post hi-low isolation. After spending many years at Kansas under Bill Self, it is no surprise that FGCU coach Joe Dooley frequents hi-low actions. If 3 can set a solid screen the goal is for 5 to try and catch in the middle of the paint for a quick score. However, if X5 fights over top of the screen of X3 and X5 switch, 5 is to seal his man on the top side for a lob pass over the top for a finish. See More

This tournament is one of the best in the Nation with the best teams in Kentucky in attendance. 3 Shots at 3 Spots

This past week while in Louisville for the King of the Bluegrass we were fortunate to watch NCAA Division 2 powerhouse Bellarmine University practice before taking off a few days for Christmas. Their practice was very impressive. The amount of energy and communication throughout the entire practice is exactly what our team needed to witness. This shooting drill is one they opened up practice with and allowed to get up a ton of shots in a short amount of period. The drill incorporates the 3 main spots on the floor (top of key and each corner) and 3 different shots at each spot. The line under the rim passes to the "spot" and then closes out to the ball, the player receives the pass and shot fakes before making a 1 or 2 dribble attack before passing to the 3rd spot. After passing (or shooting) follow your pass (shot) to the next line so each player performs each shot type at all 3 spots. I believe the goal of the drill was to score somewhere around 155 points; 3pt=3, 15 ft=2, lay-ups=1. Below are the shots that each player must perform at each spot: Corner 1 3 pointer Catch & rip 15 footer Catch & rip and finish at the rim/floater Top of the Key 3 pointer Catch & rip step-back 15 footer Catch & rip finish at the rim with a power lay-up / up and under Corner 2 3 pointer Catch & rip 15 footer Catch & rip and finish at the rim/floater Special thank you to Scott Davenport for allowing us to watch his practice. 5 on 4 to 5 on 5 Transition

This is another drill that I got from watching Bellarmine University practice last week. This is a great drill because it not only works on scramble situations having 4 players defend 5 in the half-court, but it also forces the offense (new defense) to sprint back after change of possession to prevent any easy lay-ups. After making your one transition stop after a made shot or the defense secures the rebound and repeat the drill the other way. Make sure you switch the offense and defensive teams who must scramble each time and rotate the players that are back. Do this drill for time or until a team reaches a pre-set point total. See More

Rhody Up

This week I am going to share a series of plays that begin with rhody cuts. I term a rhody cut a cut from wing to wing above both elbows, usually off a screen or rub from one or both bigs. Some may refer to this action as an Iverson cut. This first action is a simple one without a lot of moment that gives your point guard a rim attack. Rhody Back

Rhody back is another simple yet very effective screen the screener post-up play to run after using a rhody cut. In the play below, have 1 delay his dribble to the wing until 2 almost reaches the point of the screen from 4. This will occupy X4 for a second before being hit with the backscreen. If X3 and X4 do a poor job communicating on the backscreen and overload to the post, 3 will be open after the pin down from 5. See More

Rhody Elevator

This Rhody option is one to run as a quick hitter in a Need 3 situation. Once again it is essential that 2 cuts shoulder to shoulder off the screens from 5 and 4 to encourage X5 and X4 to become occupied with the cut that they do not see the elevator action coming. Furthermore, if X5 sniffs out the play and tries to deny the pass to 3, slip 5 to the rim for a lay-up (If you don't need a 3 pointer). See More

Rhody Triple

This Rhody play is one of my favorites as it incorporates a ton of movement to put the defense in compromising positions. In Frame 2, as 3 starts attacking the rim, the triple stagger will occupy most (if not all) of the weak side defense as they become concerned with guarding the stagger screen. If 3 cannot get to the rim, look to throwback to 2, or 4/5 slipping to the rim after setting their screens. See More

Rhody Exchange Up

The last Rhody play for this weak creates more movement amongst the bigs and results in a middle pick & roll. As 4 uses the screen from 5, 1 should look at 4 for a second as he could be open. However, that is a tough passing angle so more than likely 1 will keep it. (If you want to feed 4, 1 should quickly advance to 3 for a wing post feed). By having 5 set a screen for a player to the rim the goal is to get X5 to help momentarily and cause him to be late on the pick & roll. As a result, you will have three options of a attack: 1. 1 attacking the rim 2. 1 throwing back to 5 at the free-throw line for a jumper 3. X2 helps on penetration and kick to 2 for a shot See More

Mark Gottfried frequented this half-court offense set while the head coach at the University of Alabama. The main reason this play was so successful was because Gottfried had a 5 man in 6'9" 255 lb Richard Hendrix. Hendrix was a force inside and almost impossible to move off the block. Once you got sealed, it was an automatic two points. If X3 tried chasing this screen, 3 occasionally would be open for a lay-up. See More

Noah did a great job selling this play dribbling at the pin-down before quickly turning to feed Gibson ducking in. Noah's quick dribble right put X4 a step off Gibson to allow the easy post. "Out"-Carolina/Screen-In

John Pelphrey ran this Carolina backscreen action while the head coach of the University of Arkansas. What I love about this play is by have 2 set the backscreen to 4, a lack of communication will result in one of three outcomes: 1. Lob to 4 2. 2 will be open as X2 helped because X4 was nailed on the backscreen 3. X5 is forced to help on 2 and 5 can flash for an elbow jumper or iso-drive to the rim. If none of those options are available the pick & roll finishes up the play. With the floor spread and the pick so close to the baseline it will be difficult to help on the roll of 5 if X5 is caught helping X2. See More

The Oklahoma City Thunder ran this quick pick & roll pin-down action this week to get Serge Ibaka a quick catch & shoot mid-range jumper. Kevin Durant has been on a scoring tear lately, making this play tougher to guard. As KD used the pick & roll, X5 was forced to help to prevent the pull-up or rim attack. This forced X4 to sit on the screen longer than normal to prevent Perkins from rolling wide-open to the rim. This allowed for the open shot for Ibaka. See More
