Basketball Play - Elbow Weak

Elbow Weak

Kyle Gilreath 04/24/2013

Monday night in Game 2 of the NBA Playoffs, the Chicago Bulls ran this elbow pick & roll action in their win over the Brooklyn Nets. The Bulls are a dangerous team with Hinrich and Robinson on the floor giving them the ability to run pick & rolls for two excellent point guards who are also capable shooters. See More

The San Antonio Spurs ran this middle pick & roll play Wednesday night versus the LA Lakers in their Game 2 victory of the NBA Playoffs. The Lakers' effort to prevent a lay-up by Parker resulted in a kick out catch & shoot 3-pointer from Matt Bonner. See More

The Denver Nuggets ran this UCLA into a PIck & Roll action during Game 6 of the NBA Playoffs in their loss to the Golden State Warriors. What made this play so effective is Faried got a piece of Koufos' man on the roll which made Koufos' man late to help on the pick & roll. See More

Basketball Play - BONUS NBA Play of the Day May 9: Miami Heat Power

BONUS NBA Play of the Day May 9: Miami Heat Power

Kyle Gilreath 05/09/2013

Last night in an impressive win over the Chicago Bulls in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Semi-Finals, the Miami Heat ran this play to get Lebron james a post up action. What made this play so effective is Ray Allen set the initial back screen on Lebron. Having the best shooter in NBA history set a screen really puts the defense in a bind because if you over-help the defense ends up late on the pin-down and more than likely give up an open 3-pointer. Basketball Play - 23 Chest

23 Chest

Kyle Gilreath 05/10/2013

The New York Knicks ran this play in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Semi-Finals versus the Indiana Pacers. Some coaches are not big fans of running guard on guard ballscreens because they are easy to switch. But by screening Kidd into the pick it forces the defense to make one of two decisions: 1. Switch and the defense ends up with a big helping on the pick & pop. 2. If the defense doesn't switch the guard is late to help on the pick & pop and could result in JR Smith pulling up for a jumper. Furthermore, the Knicks put Carmelo Anthony (4) spaced in the opposite corner. This is an excellent strategy as well because his defense is probably told not to help off too much of their leading scorer. See More

NBA Play of the Day May 11: Chicago Bulls Rhodie Punch

Kyle Gilreath 05/11/2013

The Miami Heat ran this play to start Game 3 of the Eastern Conference Semi-Finals versus the Chicago Bulls. It seems to be a theme lately that coaches are doing a fantastic job of either screening players into picks OR setting screening which puts the defense in a bind and using the initial screener as a picker. The Miami Heat did an excellent job with this play because the Bulls had to respect the fact that Wade and Lebron both came off screens. This allowed Bosh to quickly step out for the pick & roll in which the defense was a tad late helping. See More

NBA Play of the Day May 14: Oklahoma City Thunder Slide Punch

Kyle Gilreath 05/14/2013

Monday night in their Game 4 loss to the Memphis Grizzlies, the Oklahome City Thunder ran this action for a pick & roll. Throughout the game the Thunder continued to put Memphis into pick & roll situations with a shooter spaced away to force the defense to make a decision. This time, but moving Durant over top, X4 had to respect the cut for a moment which forced the defense to be a tad late on the pick & roll. Furthermore, the Memphis defense decided to stay home on 2 (Sefolosha) which allowed Ibaka to be open on the roll. See More

NBA Play of the Day May 20: New York Knicks Horns Double

Kyle Gilreath 05/20/2013

The New York Knicks ran this play during their playoff loss versus the Indiana Pacers Saturday night in the Eastern Conference Semi-Finals. There are severals aspects I love about this play. 1. I love running staggered pick & rolls (especially at lower levels) because most coaches do not teach their players how to guard. **I teach the first big to level the screen to prevent the slip and the second big to be the hedger/trapper/helper. 2. By using Carmelo in the first pick, the defense did not want to detach itself for too long and giveaway a look from the Knicks' best player. 3. The Knicks spaced two shooters in the corners (2-JR Smith, 4-Copeland) which made it difficult to help on this action and give up an open corner three. See More

NBA Play of the Day May 24: San Antonio Spurs Hook Out

Kyle Gilreath 05/22/2013

Last night in their exciting Game 2 matchup with the Memphis Grizzlies in Game 2 of the Western Conference Finals, the San Antonio Spurs ran this pick & pop action to open up the floor with several options to score. As I have preached quite a bit recently, I love screening bigs into pick & rolls. What makes this play so special is that it allowed Duncan to pop to the elbow for one of his go-to shots. Additionally, the Spurs screened in for hot shooting Danny Green for a possible look from the deep corner. Not only did this screen for Green give them another scoring option, but it took some of the help out of the paint in the even Parker turned the corner to get to the rim. See More

Quick Rip

Kyle Gilreath 05/23/2013

The Miami Heat ran this Quick Hitter last night versus the Indiana Pacers which gave them two different looks throughout the game. Norris Cole did an excellent job creating an angle towards the rim. This made the defense shift to help in the paint an opened up both looks. See More
