Basketball Play - Miami Heat Horns Twist Low

Miami Heat Horns Twist Low

Kyle Gilreath 06/10/2013

The Miami Heat ran this play midway through the 1st quarter of Game 2 of the 2013 NBA Finals verus the San Antonio Spurs. Setting two different angled screens is very effective, especially when the opponent is flat hedging the screens. Further more, setting the screens lower and lower also makes it more difficult to guard because make the rotations off of shooters to help much longer. See More

Late in the 2nd quarter of Game 2 of the NBA Finals, the MIami Heat ran this pick & roll play for Lebron James which led to an open 3-pointer for Ray Allen. The spacing by the Miami Heat made this very difficult to guard. The Spurs were forced to defend Lebron on the pick which led to Ray Allen's defender rotating down to help Lebron found him easily on the wing. See More

NBA Play of the Day June 14: Miami Heat Hook Double

Kyle Gilreath 06/14/2013

The Miami Heat ran this two plays back to back last in during Game 4 of the NBA Finals versus the San Antonio Spurs. A trend in the NBA that I love and many coaches don't follow (which I don't understand why) is running plays that work in succession. If a play works well once, why not try it again and make your opponent guard it? That is what the Miami Heat did last night, Option 1 was a quick pin down for Ray Allen which led to an easy floater in the lane. The very next possession down the court the Heat ran the same action but the Spurs did a much better job defending and the Heat had to deviate to a different play. See More

Basketball Play - Horns Pop

Horns Pop

On the last day of the Orlando NBA Summer League, the Detroit Pistons ran this simple continuity horns action for multiple pick & rolls. Popping your bigs and having them pass and sprint into continuous pick & rolls is not only hard to guard, but will help them if they play at the next level. See More

Basketball Play - 1-Hand Pass Follow Pick & Roll

1-Hand Pass Follow Pick & Roll

Kyle Gilreath 07/19/2013

Teaching your players to effectively and efficiently pass with 1 hand will improve skills and power and become overall better passers. The key to this drill is teaching both passers how to catch the ball and obsorb the force into your hand like a spring and fire the pass back from the shoulder area. When setting the pick & roll/pop many coaches force their players to roll opening their chest up so they never turn their back to the ball. I like to give my players the option to roll either way depending on their comfort level. (turning over their low shoulder or opening up). I personally prefer the quick turn (instead of opening to the ball) because it is quicker and the screener can create more space more efficiently. If they choose to turn over their low shoulder make sure they do it quickly and snap their head around first to locate the ball. Today I had each player make 3 shots from each spot/move and then repeated the drill on the right side. See More

This is an excellent quick hitter the Sacramento Kings ran during the 2013 NBA Las Vegas Summer League. One of the options not drawn is for 4 to slip hard to the rim if X4 jumps out hard to help on the flare screen for 3. The shot for 2 is more likely in high school or college because X2 is allowed to sit in the lane and help, whereas in the NBA they can only sit there for 2.9 seconds. See More

Basketball Play - Cutters

Cutters

Kyle Gilreath 08/16/2013

Michigan's John Beilein ran this play versus Syracuse in the 2013 Final Four in Atlanta. This action consists of tons of movement forcing the defense to communicate and scramble around. As the defense scrambles to match-up to cutters, it is a great opportunity to set a pick & roll on the zone. Basketball Play - 2 Power Gap

2 Power Gap

Kyle Gilreath 08/16/2013

This zone offense play from Wichita State was run versus Louisville in the 2013 Final Four. This play from Gregg Marshall is one of my favorite zone offense actions of all time; mostly because Billy Donovan runs it frequently, and very well. Setting the pick & roll on the top of the zone forces X2 to help or switch onto the ball. On the pass from 2 to 1, X2 is caught trying to recover so X4 starts sliding up to stunt. Making for a perfect opportunity for 5 to duck in hard on the zone for a post-up. For every play Wichita State ran during the 2013 Final Four check out my eBook, “Championship Execution”. See More

Louisville ran this pick & roll play in their 2013 Final Four game versus Wichita State. Siva (1) did an excellent job head hunting X5 after flipping the ball to 2. This action happened very quickly as 2 attacked the paint X4 had to stunt at the ball and X3 sank down to cover 4. All of this action forced so much help that 2 was able to find 3 spotting up in the corner for a catch & shoot. Wichita State ran this action which ended with a pick & roll/replace in their Final Four matchup versus Louisville. As 1 came off the pick aggressively, the exchange by 4 and 5 allowed for an opportunity for 5 to seal his man for a lob over top.
